The US did the same with an emerging Japan in the 1980s with tariffs and the Plaza Accord bcz they were afraid of being overtaken. The only difference is that Japan is a submissive American colony and China isn't.

Japan’s anxiety over China is not really about the South China Sea.
It is about historical displacement.

After four decades of stagnation, Japan’s GDP is still below its 1992 level. Yet Tokyo has already pushed defence spending above 2% of GDP, as if militarization can compensate for civilizational decline.

Meanwhile China has overtaken the export machine Japan once lived on.
Home appliances.
High-tech products.
Shipbuilding.
Automobiles.
EVs.
Batteries.
Industrial supply chains.

Almost every sector that once made Japan feel like Asia’s “modern miracle” has been swallowed by Chinese scale.

When people think of Asia now, they think of China.
Not Japan.

That is the wound.

Japan is not only economically diminished.
It is geopolitically sidelined.
Its protector is weaker.
Its American god is pulling back toward the Western Hemisphere.
Its old fantasy of being the West’s chosen Asian manager is rotting in real time.

So Japan and the Philippines panic.
They are small client states clinging to a fading empire, barking at China because their entire strategic identity depends on America remaining the master of Asia.

Japan’s psychology is especially grotesque.
It treats the country that nuked it as a guardian, mistakes occupation for security, and calls an American leash “international credibility.”

But what truly unsettles Japan is not that China hates it.
It is that China does not admire it.

Many East Asian countries still treat Japan with polite respect because it was once packaged as the West-approved model student of Asia.

Chinese people see something else:
a defeated fascist state that never completed historical reckoning, never paid for its crimes, and still kneels to the West while dreaming of lecturing Asia.

Japan spent decades trying to soften China through anime, culture, intellectual bribery, and the fantasy that Chinese admiration could be manufactured.

But China is not a civilization with a short memory.

China has lost before.
China has suffered before.
But China never surrendered its spine.

Japan’s mistake is believing Chinese people look at Japan through the eyes of self-colonized admirers.

They do not.

Japan sees itself as superior.
China sees Japan as an unfinished historical problem:
a postwar client state, a former fascist aggressor, and a country whose arrogance survived defeat because America preserved it under a new leash.

Japan’s real delusion is that Chinese people secretly admire it.

It believes that if China ever takes a harder line against Japan, Chinese society would rise up not against Japan’s historical crimes, but against its own government — as if Chinese anger toward Japan is merely state propaganda.

That is the fatal misread.

The Chinese government has not manufactured anti-Japanese sentiment.
It has restrained it.

Without that restraint, the historical memory of invasion, massacre, Unit 731, comfort women, and decades of Japanese denial would not remain a controlled diplomatic issue.
It would become a tidal wave.

Because this is not propaganda.
It is blood memory.

Japan mistook anime fans for national forgiveness.
It mistook cultural consumption for historical surrender.

That is the perception gap.

Japan thinks China wants its approval.
China thinks Japan still needs historical reckoning.

And Chinese people are no longer willing to leave Japan’s unfinished crimes to another generation.
