We act as if the governments are aliens and not you and I. Our problem is not a government problem but a mindset formed from how morally bankrupt our upbringing is. Every bad behaviour you see today is a product of the homes we all came from. We expect badly behaved and illtrained individuals who come into power to suddenly become saints and when they don't we call them government faults. We carry our flawed character everyday without the willingness to change who we are, change our mindset and belief systems and then get into power and become a worse version of ourselves. This is not a government issue but a people issue. Until we go back to the root of our problems and start raising children with right character who will become agents of change and take those renewed mindsets into leadership positions Nigeria will not be what we want it to be. Not even prayers alone can help us. We have to be intentional in fixing ourselves first then we can have a Nigeria we want.

STATEMENT BY THE PLATEAU CONSENSUS MOVEMENT: On the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund and Plateau's Own Security Priorities Jos, July 9, 2026

We note the inauguration of the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund and Governor Caleb Mutfwang's participation alongside his colleagues from across the nineteen northern states. A monthly regional commitment of one billion naira, and a board that includes a son of Plateau in Napoleon Bali, is worth acknowledging.

Coordinated funding for a region under pressure from banditry and kidnapping is not a bad idea. But it is not Plateau's idea, and it does not answer Plateau's problem.

The vocabulary of the new Trust Fund is banditry, terrorism, cattle rustling, criminality that crosses borders and needs a regional response. That is a real crisis for much of the North. It is not, on its own, an accurate description of what Plateau faces. What threatens us here is not itinerant criminality passing through. It is a slower, more targeted pressure on specific communities, their land, and their right to remain who they are on soil their ancestors are buried in. Call it what our people already call it: an existential threat to our survival and our "heritage."

A fund designed and governed at a regional table, built around a different vocabulary of crisis, does not reflect the sincerity that Plateau's peculiar and existential situation demands. Sincerity here looks like Plateau's own instrument, fully resourced, answerable to Plateau's own government. That instrument already exists. It is called Operation Rainbow, and it has gone under-equipped and underfunded for longer than any of us should be comfortable admitting. If nineteen states can find one billion naira a month for a regional fund, Plateau State can find the resources to revamp, re-equip, and reposition Operation Rainbow which can be backed by the kind of appropriation that meets modern day reality, not the shortfalls of a bygone budget cycle.

Drones, digital mapping, early warning systems, real intelligence infrastructure; the same tools the new regional board says it intends to deploy elsewhere are just as necessary here, and they should not reach Plateau only on Kaduna's schedule.

This is where the State House of Assembly has a job to do, and so far has not done it. Appropriation for Operation Rainbow cannot keep arriving as an afterthought in a budget cycle dominated by other concerns. The Assembly holds the power of the purse in this state, and the power of the purse is exactly what a security outfit fighting for Plateau's survival has been denied. We call on our lawmakers to wake up to that fiscal responsibility and appropriate what Operation Rainbow actually needs to function, not what is left over once every other line item has been satisfied.

Plateau will support every legitimate regional and federal effort to bring peace to the North. But peace for Plateau starts with an instrument that is ours, funded by a legislature that is ours, and accountable to the communities whose survival is actually at stake.
