Maher Awartani cousin of Hisham Awartani one of the 3 Palestinian Americans shot in Vermont yesterday, shared an important update.

“My Cousin Hisham Awartani, a sweet and bright junior at Brown University, was shot today in Burlington Vermont.

He was shot in the neck and arm less than two miles from his grandmother’s house who he was visiting for thanksgiving weekend. He survived but we are all praying that he will be able to walk again.

Hisham and his two friends were shot point blank with no altercation, argument or protest. They were shot because they were wearing the Palestinian / Arab Kuffiyyeh. It was a hate crime.

The dehumanization and demonization of Palestinians (and Arabs) through the zealous and irresponsible rhetoric of American mainstream media and politicians is fueling racism and hate and is putting our community in real danger. This has to stop!
