@UNODC_HTMSS This is now endemic in the Nigerian ecosystem. There isn't enough advocacy and or training in this regard to help prepare the individuals, families, government agencies and the society at large for this menace. Can we please do something?
After 3 decades of listening to his doctors, my father ended up with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
After 3 years of listening to his son, my father ended up 40lbs lighter and cancer-free.
Here are 39 health secrets his doctors forgot to tell him:
1. Stop doing diets that have a name.
2. Carbs don't make you fat - too many calories do.
3. Your physical health and mental health are not two separate things - they are reflections of one another.
4. The only *permanent* hack to drink less alcohol is to build a life so good you no longer feel the need to escape it.
5. Working out 3-5 days/wk is more sustainable long term than 6-7 days/wk.
6. The only equipment you *need* is your body.
7. Drinking diet Coke is significantly healthier than drinking regular Coke.
8. Resistance training is far superior to cardio for fat loss.
9. The only “diet” that works is a high-protein one.
10. Eating protein before carbs is the easiest way to crave less carbs.
11. Skipping workouts to spend more time with your family shortens your time on earth with your family.
12. Self-deprecating humor is a sign that you are not mentally healthy.
13. Exercise is a documented antidepressant - use it as such.
14. Most hunger scares can be cured by drinking water.
15. Sodium is not killing you it is keeping you alive.
16. Your habits make you fat not the “fat gene”.
17. Constantly wearing running shoes weakens your feet, core, and lower back.
18. Train your back and your core 2x as much as everything else.
19. Wear blue light glasses or put your phone in “night mode” to improve your sleep quality.
20. Take cold showers or ice baths periodically to increase your stress tolerance.
21. Cardio is less about fat loss and more about strengthening your heart and mind.
22. Eating your protein first will prevent you from overeating elsewhere.
23. Nuts are not a “healthy” snack. They are high fat, high calorie, and easy to overeat.
24. Lifting weights is the most effective workout method to lower your body fat percentage and improve your health.
25. Just because something is “vegan” does not mean it’s healthy.
26. Intermittent fasting is not a magic pill. It works because you eat less food.
27. Working out is not just for looks. Your body is the temple of God and you should honor it as such.
28. Stop waiting till your next doctor's visit to weigh yourself. You can’t manage a problem you avoid confronting. Weigh yourself daily instead.
29. Having no routine on the weekends is saying your goals don’t matter 29% of the time.
30. Turn the room temperature down to 68 degrees or lower at night. We fall asleep faster in colder environments.
31. Eat slower. It gives your body time to secret Leptin, the “I’m full” hormone.
32. Find an active hobby you enjoy and participate in it regularly.
33. Stop picking up your phone as soon as you wake up. Mindless morning scrolling starts the day off with unnecessary stress. Wait 30 minutes to check your phone instead.
34. Stop sleeping on your side, it deteriorates your shoulder health over time. Sleep on your back instead.
35. Don’t drink coffee as soon as you wake up - but don’t drink coffee in the afternoon either. Both extremes mess up your hormones.
36. Men operate on a 24-hour hormone cycle. Our drive is highest in the morning. Take advantage of this and work out before your family wakes up.
37. Mindless snacking is less about hunger and more about your lack of emotional control.
38. I’ve never seen anyone keep the weight off long-term without accountability outside of themselves. Share your goals with other men.
39. Motivation is fleeting - you must establish proper default actions to actually be consistent.
During an open lesson for schoolchildren, “Talks about the important” Vladimir Putin told the story of his family and said that Russia could not be defeated.
From his grandfather's letters, he learned that his grandmother died in his arms after the Nazis' shelling.
PUTIN: "My grandfather wrote about how my grandmother died in his arms: there were battles, and the villagers were hiding in the trenches. A German bullet hit her in the stomach, and she died in his arms.
And then there were the words that struck me. He wrote to his son at the front about my grandmother’s last words. She was fully aware that she was dying, and she told her husband: “Stop crying, do not upset me.” Just imagine the depth of their relationship. She was dying but she was more worried about him because he was upset (that is what she literally said) and crying. Can you imagine how deep these ordinary people’s relationships and love were? How can we not follow their example?
When we mention our traditional values, we also mean this particular inner love that is the basis of relationships in our society. These are our values; how can we not protect them? They are the foundation of our existence and our life."
And then, in a simple family letter, my grandfather gives an order to his son at the front: 'Beat the scum!'.
“I understood why we won the Great Patriotic War, it is impossible to defeat such a people with such an attitude. We were absolutely invincible, and now we are the same,” he said.

THURSDAY EVENING REFLECTION - A mind sunk in the mire of avarice, gets numbed to humanity.
1. Human needs are few because their material nature is finite. No one person could finish eating a hundred-pound sumptuously roasted chicken or ham and be fine.
2. The ability of the human mind to imagine and desire to bring the ‘imagined’ into reality disposes it to many wants. There is no border patrol in the adventures of the mind when it comes to wants.
3. In the milk for nursing, a woman’s nature seeks to nurture, disposing her to realise that needs, not wants, are necessary to sustain lives.
4. In their innate protective ‘make up’, nature instructs men to limit their efforts to their needs, intuitively admonishing them against encroaching into the needs of others by their wants.
5. Needs are needs; and everyone require needs to live. Wants are just wants; no one requires wants to live.
6. It is the unbridled desire by a few to satisfy their (insatiable) wants that deprives many others of their needs and compel them to live in ‘less-than-human’ ways.
7. Nothing is fundamentally wrong in ‘wanting’, for without wanting humans won’t be humans. Before aeroplane came to exist, people travelled. It was tedious, time consuming and sometimes dangerous, but people travelled. So, inventing the aeroplane was in some sense a want, but a ‘good want’, because it serves humanity’s need for a faster and safer means of transportation. Nevertheless, the acquisition of this same technology can be turned into a ‘bad want’, when a public servant embezzles monies, that are meant to support and provide for the needs of many, for the purpose of acquiring a private jet, and live in luxury.
8. Following the recent coup d’état in Gabonese Republic, it was alleged that a total sum of $6.6m equivalent (in different currencies) was found in cash in the home of an individual linked to the family of the ousted President. This amount of money can pay the salaries of 500 Gabonese workers for 5 years at the current minimum wage rate of FCFA150,000. It is money proceeds from corrupt practices that commonly kept this way. This amount is actually very little compared to the amount many more individuals (politicians, pastors, military service men, etc) all over the world steal from the commonwealth or trust of others just so they satisfy their wants. The news is everywhere.
9. People of good will have asked: “what are they doing with this kind of money while many people including children live in poverty?” Those that ask this and related questions must realise that any mind sunk in the mire of avarice gets numbed to humanity.
10. Avarice is an unrestrained desire for acquisition of material goods. It is a vice. A capital one. Anyone could be trapped in it because anyone can want, but no one should. I have no doubt that you (the reader) may be wanting something right now.
11. What are your wants? Take some time to reassess them. Are they all about you and your comfort (and those you consider loved ones), with no thought whatsoever on how achieving them will affect other people and the environment?
12. Even as the secular world may pretend to care less about avarice, the human nature will not spare the conscience of leaders from speaking against it - even in coded languages. For example, everything about #sustainabledevelopment goals (#SDG30) is a mission against avarice. All the 17 goals invite everyone at all levels to restrain their wants to avoid denying others their needs, and to safeguard the earth. That’s all.
13. Whatever you do, guard your mind from getting sunk in the mire of avarice. If you don’t, ultimately your soul will sink in darkness because it will be too heavy to rise into light.
14. If wisdom reigns in minds of all men, and they eschew avarice, the riches of the earth are sufficient that no child anywhere on earth should lack any need.
