Runaway AI poses a threat to us all. How humanity stays in control should be a priority for everyone.

Andrew Scott delivers this speech too slowly; I know some viewers will hate the way he breaks up the verse. AND YET even in spite of that I think this is the best delivery of this soliloquy I’ve ever seen.

He makes it sound like it’s not a portentous speech everyone already knows but a morally serious real-time deliberation, by a highly intelligent person in extreme pain, considering what it would mean to end his own life.

Not only is the editing incredible timing-wise but the words even match the actions. Must have taken forever to make this! Not often a 6 min clip has me completely hooked

"Almost all of my books were stolen to teach AI how to create its voice"

But what really concerns Katherine Rundell is what the proliferation of AI is going to do to children's learning.

I don’t know if anyone still cares about what I say, but what is happening here has become a catastrophe in every sense of the word.

Today was the first day of school for students in Gaza City after three years of war. It was supposed to be a day filled with joy, with children carrying their schoolbags, wearing new clothes, and returning to their classrooms. But the reality was completely different.

I saw children without schoolbags, without shoes, without notebooks or pens, and some wearing worn-out clothes. I saw a school that was nothing more than a suffocating, extremely hot tent, without desks or chairs. The children use stones and cardboard boxes from aid supplies to create something to write on.

There are no bathrooms for the children. There is not enough food or water. This is not simply a shortage of school supplies; this is a catastrophe affecting an entire generation.

A child who is supposed to go to school to learn leaves school to stand in line for water, then waits in another line for food. Their lives have become a constant struggle to find water, food, and simply survive.

How can a child learn under these conditions? How can we talk about the future of these children when the most basic necessities for education and life are not available? We are facing an entire generation at risk of being lost.

Every day that passes without real intervention means another part of these children’s future is being lost. This is a catastrophe that cannot be allowed to pass in silence. Write about the children of Gaza, talk about their schools, and share what is happening to them.

Do not let the world become accustomed to seeing children without a childhood.

From today’s Times: ‘Researchers at the University of Cambridge said that regardless of “what or how we read”, sitting down with a book is linked to improved health and problem solving. Benefits include lowering stress and reducing the risk of dementia, and span all types of reading, from comic books to classic novels or hefty non-fiction tomes.’

Insights from A-levels: Maths has 115k entries & Eng Lit just 36k.

20 yrs ago they both had about 50k.

At the risk of sounding like Claude, this isn't just educational change - it's cultural change.

The only homework I assign is for a student to read for 20 minutes each night. Today a few of my students told me "Mr. Blackwell. We can't do this. We don't have any books at home." Nor do their parents take them to the library. That's why books in my classroom are so critical.
