With less than ten days to go until our eviction, contingency plans are going into operation. The #UCD Common Room will remain in existence as a member-run social community. This cannot be taken away from us by management. Watch this space for pop-up lunches & social evenings.

In a university which values community and its international staff, it seems ironic that a community-run organisation would be dismantled by senior management and that a place that staff coming from abroad have made into their first community here in Ireland would go for profits.

@Bentonra @realcommonroom1 @ucddublin Not like at all. I keep thinking about arriving here in 1994 knowing no one - literally no one - in Ireland. The common room was where I started to build my social world. I doubt I’d still be at @ucddublin without it.

Dropped into the common room to thank a colleague for her fantastic work. I realised that was my final visit. My first visit was nearly 20 yrs ago with J. McGuire post marathon pure history module. Not always perfect but very sad to see it end @realcommonroom1

Yes. And @realcommonroom1 is a very well-supported community resource for all @ucddublin staff.
Closing it means we will have no local staff meeting place/ lunch spot/ social events venue.
Total disregard for how social capital and institutional identities are built over time.

Today is graduation day @ucddublin, yet what should be a celebration is marred by news the three long-serving staff at the UCD Common Room are being made redundant. In my 15 years at UCD, the closure of @realcommonroom1 is one of the worst decisions I’ve encountered. Appalling.
