this free lecture is the most decorated mathematician alive on the exact problem sitting underneath every factor model, and it costs nothing.
at the board it's simple. Tao's lifelong theme is the line between structure and randomness. The Erdős discrepancy problem asks a deceptively simple thing: can you write an endless string of plus-ones and minus-ones that stays perfectly balanced forever? Tao proved you cannot. No matter how cleverly you try, imbalance, hidden structure, is forced to accumulate as the sequence grows. There is no such thing as a long stream of pure, structureless noise. That's the whole idea, minus the jargon.
Which is exactly why a multi-factor model can work, and exactly why it can kill you. Stack enough weak signals and real structure will appear, because at scale structure is unavoidable. But so will fake structure, patterns that exist only because the data is long enough to force them. Same point as the post above: finding structure is guaranteed. Knowing which structure is an edge is the rare and expensive part.
the mathematics is free and public. what nobody can sell you is the judgment to tell the structure the market will pay you for from the structure that exists only because you looked hard enough. That judgment is the alpha, and it takes years to build.

Disney had its own paint laboratory, built by a woman named Mary Weiser, the first of its kind in animation. Its job was to invent shades that did not exist yet. In the early thirties, when the studio was still making shorts, there were around eighty shades on the shelves. By the time they finished Snow White there were fifteen hundred.
Every one of them went on by hand, cel by cel, and each cel needed hours to dry before it could be photographed.
The Ink and Paint department was almost entirely women. According to the Walt Disney Family Museum, the paints were sometimes named after them, and to have a color carry your name was considered an honour.
So the dark of Bambi's forest, the lamplight in Geppetto's workshop, the blue at Cinderella's attic window: none of it is a filter or a setting or a dimmer turned down. Each is a specific colour that a specific person mixed in a jar, and some of those jars had her name on the label.
That is why these scenes still feel more alive than anything made since. We went from hands, to computers, to AI, and at every step there is a little less of the person left in it…

An Indian physicist won $3 million, nearly three times the Nobel Prize. He donated much of it to support science in India and then cycled to work the next day. His name is Ashoke Sen, and very few people outside physics know who he is.
Sen was born in Kolkata in 1956, the son of a physics professor. He studied at Presidency College, took his MSc at IIT Kanpur, and earned his PhD from Stony Brook University in 1982. After postdoctoral stints at Fermilab and SLAC, the two most prestigious physics labs in the United States, he had every reason to stay, but he came back to India.
In the early 1990s, string theory had a fragmentation problem. Five separate versions existed, seemingly describing different mathematical universes, with physicists increasingly unsure which one, if any, was correct. In 1994, Sen proposed S-duality: the idea that two string theories that appeared completely different were actually the same theory viewed from opposite mathematical perspectives. Strong coupling in one corresponded to weak coupling in the other. They were the same object, seen from different angles.
That single paper ignited what became known as the second superstring revolution. It gave Ed Witten, widely considered the greatest living theoretical physicist, the foundation to propose M-theory in 1995, the first serious candidate for a unified theory of everything.
In 1998, Stephen Hawking personally nominated Sen for Fellowship of the Royal Society. In 2012, he received the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. He holds the Padma Shri (2001), Padma Bhushan (2013), and Dirac Medal (2014). He spent most of his career at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute in Allahabad, not at MIT or Princeton.
He chose India. He stayed in India. He did work from India that Stephen Hawking noticed, that Ed Witten built upon, and that earned him a prize with monetary worth three times the Nobel.
Then he cycled to work like just another day.....
