This week in class we talked about advertising versus public relations. One of the issues with advertising is that people are skeptical. Do you feel skeptical of advertisements? What is your favorite PR interaction you have seen on social media? #321 #J201
@BensonAmbria#J201 #321 I think the greatest skill is an understanding of the platform they are on and how to connect with their audience there. I think the Duolingo PR team is fantastic and could be used as a good example here.
@rory_madden11 I think the slight risk that comes with PR is much outweighed from all the benefits of PR. The problem with advertisements is that people can tell. PR is a little sneakier and almost a form of manipulation because people think they are forming their own opinions. #J201 #321
#321 #J201 On Monday in class we learned about the VALS framework. Which category do you think you best fit into? Is there a category that you often find yourself avoiding being friends with or has characteristics that you consider to be negative?
@KarleaSchuelke#J201 #321 I don't think that's fair. I think both can be in the moment and more planned out. I also think a lot of the times, manipulation can have more steps and require more planning than you are giving credit for.
#321 #J201 This week we talked about the principles of persuasion. Is there one principle that you feel effects you more than the other principles? Is there an advertisement or some use of persuasion that sticks out to you from your personal life?
@StrucelJacob#J201 #321 I think it depends on the person and that's why companies use many different forms of persuasion for one item or concept. Outside of the principles of persuasion, there are lots of other factors that go into attracting someone's attention
@BensonAmbria#J201 #321 I don't believe Facebook would be as successful. Their motto implies speed over security and that is how they grew so fast (both in size and power). An emphasis on security would take away from their money which comes from the advertisers
#J201 #321 On the topic of the overlap between social media and politics. How often do you see celebrities or influencers speaking on political matters? Do you feel affected by this? Do you think this a fair use of their platform?
@willjen45816414#J201 #321 I think as social media expands, more platforms will pop up. Because of this, our social interaction will be more intertwined with a mediated platform. However, I don't think there will ever come a time when social interaction is entirely online.
@StrucelJacob#J201 #321 I think media should only be regulated by government when there is threat of immediate or future danger. These companies are private and are not publicly or government funded. Because of this, these companies can pick and choose but I think that is unethical.
#321 #j201 In one of our readings this week, one idea that was presented was that the news is journalism but it is also a business. From your experience with news media, do you feel this way or notice this?
@jude_woythaler#J201 #321 I think this is very harmful especially because that group of companies is very exclusive and small. This causes the people who are in charge to stay in charge. I do think we need government regulation to help create balance
@larissaaa073 #321 #J201 I think the younger generations will have more experience. The internet is still new but for the people who are growing up with it, I like to think they will have more practice at using the internet and knowing what to expect
#J201 #321 This week in class we talked about the military entertainment complex. Do you think this is a fair use of government power? If so, why. And if not, is there a fair way the government can be involved in the entertainment industry?
@amandaodem12#J201 #321 I don't think it is because, like you said, people will just find other outlets. Also, this doesn't solve the issues, if anything it just causes more frustration from the person deplatformed and less awareness among the rest of the people
@hallebrownn #J201 #321 I think all of these concepts are equally efficient. I also think these are only efficient when the person who is experiencing these is creating danger through their platform. Otherwise, shutting them down is just a temporary fix to a larger issue
@amandaodem12 #321 #J201 I do think it is effective but it is harmful. If there is a will then there's a way. If someone who is deplatformed is determined to get their views out there, then they will share them elsewhere. Deplatforming just pushes them aside instead of addressing the problem
@hallebrownn #J201 #321 I definitely think so. I think even if you disagree with the other side, realizing that other people have lived different lives and see things differently than you can reduce extremism.
