@JohnnyMitchel3 I really like this meme and how it illustrates the spiral of silence. It really shows the difficulty in choosing between sharing your opinions or repressing them based on fear. #J201#discussion312
@Jacob_Zeddie I think it depends on which audience they want to reach and what their goal is to achieve through the ad, such as are they trying to bring in exposure or reestablish a previous product or their brand.

@EllaBuffalo I think the most important difference between the two, is that PR is trust based and free versus advertising is paid and for exposure. These are both used for different purposes therefore it is difficult to decide which is more beneficial. #J201#discussion312
@hallebrownn The article gave many solutions starting with a primary involvement of social scientists in the testing and design as well as utilizing existing researching. It also a long term goal of changing the curriculum of computer science and social science majors. #J201 #312
@redhead6158 I often see celebrities using their platforms to address prominent political issues, especially social issues. I think it's fair for them to use their platform to speak on issues that they care about and feel are important. #J201 #312
@allisonbeneker I don't know if it's possible because journalists target certain audiences and target those identities. The article even says "if it outrages it leads". This proves that they will continue to target those identities because it gathers attention to their work.
@BensonAmbria I don't think companies like Facebook would be as successful as they are now because they want to see change immediately. Even Mark Zuckerberg says he'd rather "act first and apologize first".
Is deplatforming an effective way to stop offensive or negative speech when it is so easy to find other platforms to continue spreading that message? #J201 #312
@StrucelJacob The difference is deplatforming suspends or removes the account all together, where censorship could just prevent you from saying certain topics or phrases that are offensive. #J201 #312
@BensonAmbria I don't think we give up our freedom of speech when we join social media sites because you are allowed to say what you want to all long as it's not harmful to others or incites violence. Upon joining, you have to agree to a terms of service which you have to agree to. #J201 #312
@ainsleyskomal I think all play an important role in media but I think surveillance is the most important because it determines what is news worthy for the public to know about. #J201 #312
@annamcgeough2 I think most journalist strive to meet all these standards but don't always meet it because I think keeping balance and separating their own opinions is hard to do.
Why do you think news and journalists standards (accuracy, balance, checks on pure profit maximization, democratic accountability focus, and editorial separation) make attracting a broad and diverse audience hard? #J201 #312
