in the end, the researchers came to the conclusion we know: your biology can impact who you are just as much as your sociocultural environment, as both have an effect on your cognitive patterns #lincpsych
not talking about your feelings and problems is a practice that counters cognitive therapy for mental distress, which could have exacerbated the problem #lincpsych
i agree! they had already formed their social identity and their schemas about themselves, and to have those schemas challenged caused mental distress #lincpsych
Feeling like a lab rat must take a toll on their cognitive thinking, of how they indetfiy, and the wya they think about themselves, their worth. #lincpsych
there's definitely a connection there, as the research assistant believed he would not take responsibility for his actions and therefore particupated, knowing it was unethical #lincpsych
the fact that they all had mental disorders that expressed themselves in their teenage years points to the idea that mental illness is largely biological; however, how do we know it wasn't a late effect from their separation at birth? #lincpsych
honestly same...but i definitely think the stress of being reunited and the knowledge was an adverse experience that exacerbated eddy's poor mental state at the time #lincpsych
there may have been circumstances that affected his gene expression or cognitive patterns that led to him making that decision, which could have been a result of his different upbringing #lincpsych
that's heartbreaking. if the boys had been prevented from adverse childhood experiences, or if they had been raised together, the negative pattern may have been stopped before it was too late #lincpsych
@bridgetkoehler exactly! similar interests could be the result of a similar upbringing, while attraction to similar women could be a result of their biology (such as mhc genes) #lincpsych
how many of the similarities in their personalities could be a result of their environment? since they grew up within 100 miles if each other, i dont think their home cultures could have been monumentally different #lincpsych
the stress put on the boys when they were reunited could have caused some genes to express that caused more cortisol to be released, leading them to develop manic depression #lincpsych
@2020Emmae on the other hand, because of so many ethical considerations, by not publishing i think they made it clear that what they did was wrong and should have no recognition for it #lincpsych
@2020Marianah i don't know, they could have grown up in a lower socioeconomic background that could lead to more negative behaviours and mental illness, but the separation also could cause this, so it's hard to know what was the right choice
its true that people are less likely to adopt 3 children instead of 1, but the mental repercussions that resulted from the separation demonstrate it was still a bad decision #lincpsych
