Our article about customizing loss functions for gradient boosting in @TDataScience today with @groverpr4. It's the culmination of a lot of work for one of our clients where normal MSE and MAE did not capture the business needs appropriately.

The mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) are kind of brilliant at a science level. I’ve had a few people in my real non-Twitter life ask me to explain how it works so I’m going to try my best here in this thread while I’m waiting for a patient to show.
This is a perfect example of the sort of article that would not have made the cut in the New York Times' newspaper of record days (which I'm old enough to remember), but does today.

2) Realize it sucks.
3) Actually care about it.
4) Find ways to improve.
5) Try again; repeat forever.

4) and 5) are practically automatic if you pass 3).

Writing is underrated. We've been using internal documentation extensively at @manifold_ai to synthesize our thoughts, better collaborate, and provide transparency across our team. I've personally been inspired the writing culture at companies like @stripe and @amazon too.
The ROI of human ethics is often on a long time scale. Much of human ethics is about overriding short-term interests. Housing issues, climate change, inequality-- none of these are sustainable long-term. @timoreilly#StrataData
