With this, India became the 2nd country with a commercially operating fast breeder reactor.
And this is why it matters for the whole world.

India ha alcanzado la primera criticidad del Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) en Kalpakkam, un reactor rápido de 500 MW eléctricos que llevaba más de 20 años en construcción. La criticidad marca el inicio de una reacción nuclear autosostenida. Aún no produce electricidad, pero abre la fase en la que se comprueba si el diseño funciona en condiciones reales.
Se trata de un reactor reproductor, una tecnología capaz de generar más combustible del que utiliza, cambiando por completo la forma en que se aprovecha la energía nuclear.
La importancia del PFBR no está en su potencia, sino en cómo cambia el uso del combustible nuclear. En un reactor convencional, solo una pequeña fracción del uranio se aprovecha realmente para causar fisiones que emiten energía, el uranio-235. La mayor parte, el uranio-238, queda prácticamente sin utilizar.
Un reactor reproductor está diseñado para darle la vuelta a esa limitación. Trabaja con neutrones rápidos, lo que permite transformar ese uranio-238 en plutonio-239, un material fisible que sí puede usarse como combustible. Es decir, convierte lo que en otros reactores queda como residuo en nuevo combustible utilizable.
El mismo recurso puede reutilizarse varias veces, multiplicando de forma drástica el aprovechamiento energético del uranio y reduciendo la cantidad y la vida de los residuos finales.
Esta tecnología no parte de cero. Rusia lleva años operando reactores rápidos como el BN-600 y el BN-800 (en operación comercial desde 2019), demostrando que estos sistemas pueden funcionar a escala industrial. India da ahora un paso clave para entrar en ese grupo, aunque todavía en fase prototipo.
Todo esto forma parte de una estrategia muy definida en tres etapas. Primero, reactores de agua pesada que utilizan uranio natural. Después, reactores rápidos como este, que generan plutonio. Y finalmente, el objetivo: reactores basados en torio, un recurso mucho más abundante en India que el uranio.
Los reactores rápidos son el puente imprescindible hacia ese tercer paso, porque permiten generar el material fisible necesario para arrancar el ciclo del torio. Sin ellos, esa estrategia no es viable.
La dificultad técnica es muy elevada y explica los retrasos acumulados. La prueba real empieza ahora. Si este reactor opera de forma estable y puede replicarse, el impacto en el uso del combustible nuclear será enorme.

The importance of India and China's advances on breeder reactor technology cannot be overstated.
If we could simply find a way to use modern mass manufacturing technology to make economic the rollout of a massive fleet of breeder reactors, it would literally change the course of human history.
A few pioneer companies like @AaloAtomics are working in that *direction*, but they're not building breeders yet because current supply chains, regulatory frameworks, and technology stability are not yet in place to allow this. China and India are making it a NATIONAL PRIORITY to develop this technology because they know that whoever truly solves energy transition away from fossil fuels with ECONOMIC, scalable, safe nuclear energy will dominate the global economy for the next 100+ years.
USA is *finally* making progress under the leadership of @SecretaryWright at DOE, but NRC has been standing in the way of such progress for decades and we've lost our technology leadership edge over the rest of the world.
Question for Dr. Nick: Imagine someone magically inventing a way for Traveling Wave style breeders fueled by DU to be mass-produced at scale, so we have 10TW(e) of deployed breeder capacity globally. How long could we run the ENTIRE global economy on that reactor base using only LEFTOVER DU that was discarded as "waste" from the enrichment cycle, without having to mine a single pound of U3O8 because all the fuel we needed could be found in leftover U238 in DU? (Assume the need for kickstarter fuel is covered by MOX made from reprocessing existing spent fuel waste).
