@StarryBlueWater Paul is referring to using the law to earn righteousness before God. This has been man's problem since Adam sinned. The Pharisees were the best at this. And failed every time. We are not accursed to relying on doing what God says, but doing it apart from Christ's righteousness.

@StarryBlueWater When Jesus closed out His sermon on the mount with that analogy, it was not meant to motivate us to obey; we simply can't and won't…not perfectly, which is required. The wise man will see he needs Christ, the solid rock. Build on Him and you will live.

@StarryBlueWater Sure: the law of God says, "Do this and live"—obey these laws/commands. Problem for man since Adam sinned: we can't do this personally, perfectly, perpetually.

Only one man can & did: Jesus Christ. The Gospel says: "Done for you by Jesus Christ." Now, we obey out of gratitude.
