@constans The thing I don’t get is if they were willing to just give up the civilian hostages right away why did they take them? Second, very curious to know what hamas considers a civilian hostage: cops? civilians in the reserves?
@petespiliakos Right, that's why America would never elect a doofus who campaigned on blowing up free trade with Canada, whereas Canada does so all the time. Classic rite of passage for Canadian PMs is renaming North America to Greater Manitoba
@petespiliakos Trump explicitly ran on and was elected on a platform of trade grievances and petty insults and then went ahead and enacted it. How can we take a sanctimonious attitude to *other countries reacting to it* as if they're the delicate snowflakes and we're confident and chill
@petespiliakos "Canada has a nationalist reaction over stuff like trade and petty insults and we don't." The reason a Trump administration exists at all is because America has bizarre nationalist reactions over *imagined* trade deficits and *imagined* petty insults.
@acrunksquirrel@yeselson@mattyglesias Why does the Zionism of 400 wackos in the West Bank define the Zionism of 4 million Jews in America or 6 million zionists in Israel? Are pogroms unique to zionists?
@acrunksquirrel@yeselson@mattyglesias By necessary I mean that even without a “Zionist” government you would have had a similar reaction. If Hamas had invaded Egypt on October 7 and killed 800 of their civilians what would Egypt have done? Would that have been Zionism?
@acrunksquirrel@yeselson@mattyglesias Revanchism, vengeance, racism, fear - these things are everywhere and cause war crimes without Zionism - the belief that Israel should exist - causing them. Attributing them to Zionism just puts all Jews in the docket
@acrunksquirrel@yeselson@mattyglesias Really? You think Zionism is necessary to explain war crimes in Gaza? If not for Zionism, then what? How many fewer Gazans would have died? If Israel was governed by anti Zionist Jews, eg, haredi orthodox parties , what would have happened on October 8?
@yeselson@mattyglesias Why? What’s so valuable about this argument? Why is it so key for AES to make Jews renounce their Zionism, i.e., a benign belief that it’s good that Israel exists? Why is it so important to turn it into a slur so 80% of Jews should feel bad about it all the time?
I think most Americans still significantly underestimate the damage he's done to the country and will be shocked and angry when they see the consequences -- many of which haven't hit us yet -- with the benefit of hindsight.
@constans@jwilcox79 Right but the letter signed by the signatories was taking the position that outdoor gatherings *did* spread COVID but that fighting racism was more important. IIRC they specifically called out right wing protests as being dangerous from an epidemiological perspective .
