@riseupcomus though in the 1e dmg the "handling groups of 20+ players" time in the campaign discussion is immediately followed by the section below, so it's hard for me to imagine Mr. Gygax not heartily endorsing the quote's application to both contexts:
@eigenrobot Just need to design a mechanism such that no one with even the remotest possible influence on the decision stands to save money by it going through
@mycoliza The Tune Finder utility here https://t.co/At1EzTfbxl is an essential tool for fiddle tune notation - many a rare tune found nowhere else online, and the associated homepage is a type specimen for this sort of site

@ch402 power, and contribution to human agency. Space exploration is tough to beat, with its celestial bodies named for gods, ancient roots, sheer scale and appeal to deep human desires. But I think there is a lot to draw from there.
@ch402 (some older large scale infrastructure projects, a lot of space technology and a lot of sci-fi tech more broadly) usually does tap into such aesthetics. I don't think these are usually superficialities either, but reliable signals of a technology's longetivity, trustworthiness,
@andy_matuschak@aresnick@SriniKadamati@michael_nielsen@nayafia Does time vs. pay just scale that nonlinearly? Split time has some downsides, but doesn't seem to be too different from many academic research positions in practice (with teaching, grants, administrative work, etc.), and might have upsides.
@jasoncrawford Maybe today that means something like a technically-adjacent part time job providing enough flexibility for side experimentation, while ideally providing things like a steady income, a network, tools (broadly defined), and exposure to the folk knowledge of a field.
