Fortune tellers are not prophets – Bishop Mupandasekwa

GUTU – Roman Catholic Bishop for Masvingo Diocese Raymond Tadiwa Mupandasekwa has dismissed many people calling themselves prophets as nothing but fortune tellers.
True prophets, he said, are people in whom God stays. They are ruled and controlled by the word of God. God stays and lives in them and they live in God.
“A man can say I see Dynamos winning the game against Caps tomorrow and he becomes a prophet. Another one can say I see Arsenal taking the trophy and people call such people prophets. These are not prophets, these are just fortune tellers”.
Bishop Mupandasekwa made the remarks during a sermon he gave at the official opening of St Justin Washaya Parish under Mutero Mission near Chinyika Business Centre in Chitsa, Gutu on Sunday.
The beautiful church is a result of remarkable, persistent and unyielding efforts by villagers to mobilise resources locally and from locals who now live in urban areas. Built on top of a rock and in the middle of the hinterland, construction of the church started almost 11 years ago in 2015.
More than 500 congregants from Mutero Mission and others from Soti Source attended the official opening.
Referring to the martyr the church is named after, Bishop Mupandasekwa said Justin was a Greek philosopher who lived between 100 and 165 AD. He turned Christian and defended Christianity against pagan and Jewish criticism.
He likened St Justin to prophets and deacons of the time like Philip and Stephen. He said true prophets live the word, the word live in them and the word becomes their life. He urged the congregation to emulate such life. He said many people calling themselves prophets today were just fortune tellers who do not practice what is said by the word.
“Prophets are people who are ruled by the word of God, people who are controlled by the word of God. God stays and lives in them. Prophets are dominated by the word of God; their minds, their hearts, their lives etc are dominated by the word of God. God’s laws are the prophet’s law.
“Philip fulfilled prophesies not through words but through deed. Prophets like Philip and Stephen were prepared to suffer for truth and what is right and for the word of God. Those are prophets,” said Bishop Mupandasekwa.
Bishop Mupandasekwa said everyone who contributed towards the construction of the Church was the Biblical Solomon who built the house of God in Jerusalem.
The Church project was started by the late Father Peter Mudhanganyi and it will serve 10 villages.
Mutero Mission chairperson Antony Masvingise said the project reflected unity among believers and marked a major step in strengthening the church in the area.
He thanked everyone who contributed and supported the project.
“This is a testament of unity amongst members of our church. From the beginning people were making donations and the local community provided labour. This is an important development as far as the growth of Mutero Mission is concerned,” said Masvingise.
A congregant, Angeline Mufari, said the completion of the church was a major breakthrough for worshippers who had been conducting services under a tree for years.
