The supermarkets have played a major role to their and our cost in exporting our food production industry - as supported by the Brexiteers promising cheaper food from overseas. Sensible long term cost plus contracts might restore UK veg/meat production.

@nosheepzone @UKLabour @LibDems I think you’ve missed the main reason - the big customers not willing to commit to UK growers going for short term margin over medium term supply. It probably would not have cost them any more so to do as they at some point have to pay premium prices.

@notquitesenior @acgrayling Thes shortages were widely forecasted by UK growers but major customers thought they could buy cheaper elsewhere rather than strike realistic long term deals with UK growers. Hope they will change their tune now.

@DrJoGrady no way - they are over doing it and appear selfish - ruining hospitality jobs and business for so many. And it seems very unreasonable to want top dollar whilst not allowing efficient working practices. It is only going to make many more poorer.

@DavidButler34 And what about all the land taken to grow wheat for ethanol production (?c1m T/pa) and crops for AD. Solar land is small by comparison and diversifies our energy suppy.

@DavidButler34 A bit bonkers to extend the definition especially when the govt pay farmers on any land quality not to grow food eg many mid tier options. At least with solar you get better biodiversity and energy and some food (sheep).

@BeckettUnite What about stopping all the rewilding and agri environment schemes/subsidy on this land too?? Or planting woodland? Thought not. Solar land is good for biodiversity and can be used for sheep production too - all without subsidy!
