@ciphergoth@dougclow You can attach your dependencies to your project (i.e. poetry) or you can attach your dependencies to your process (i.e. having a collection of conda environments for different tasks). It's hard to make the jump from one to the other.
@ciphergoth@dougclow I don't think there's any intrinsic problem with Poetry for the ML/Notebook use-case, and I'd claim it's a good fit for addressing reproducibility problems. The difficulty is in working practices.
@dougclow There are other tools to manage multiple system versions of Python (I have a colleague who swears by asdf), but the pattern of "some tool to handle your system installs of Python and whatever tool the project wants to use to manage dependencies in its own venv" is a solid one.
@dougclow Pyenv to manage your base installs. It's just made of bash shims, so it's not dependent on Python itself. If you wreck a base install, you can just remove and reinstall it. Use other tools (poetry, pipenv, uv, etc.) on top of this on a project by project basis.
@thomasforth Presumably you're installing on a device with a modern UEFI boot system. Did you have any problem with that, or did the Ubuntu installer just handle it?
@hyperdiscogirl I work on machine learning platform tools, so I have one foot in the Python ML/scientific stack and the other foot in distributed infrastructure. We have researchers who make ML models, and I figure out how to make those models run fast and reliably.
@s_r_constantin Is it specifically a current-culture-war-framing kind of thing? If some space you were in suddenly became about, say, fatherhood and prostate health, this would be different from what you're talking about here?
@edsaperia I think it's the above-ground vault next to the tree, and it's a family plot, so he's one of the names on it. You can just about make the name "Bayes" out on the opposite end.
@pinakographos No question, but seems like a great opportunity to briefly pop into your office and say how much value I've gotten out of all the stuff you've shared. Thanks!
@KatyDarbyWriter Single POV third-person narration (it's a murder mystery from the lone detective's POV). Mainly commented because it has a very large cast.
@chrisalbon Depends on your existing toolchain and how you use venvs. If you're happy with pyenv, use pyenv. If you're already used to miniconda and aren't going to be interacting with tools that build their own venvs (poetry, tox, build systems, etc.) keep using miniconda.
