I wrote this last year on and about the Fourth of July. I hope it is even more resonant today, as Americans celebrate 250 years of independence while their country continues to colonize Puerto Rico.

Right now, thousands in Puerto Rico are suffering dire water shortages. No power for many, daily blackouts, sweltering heat, and now mass water shortages.
Welcome to life in the corrupt and mismanaged US colony of Puerto Rico!
Brought to you by: 128 years of colonial rule and incompetent (yet loyal) colonial parties (the PNP and PPD) that thrive and depend on PR’s poverty and dependency.
Just another reason (of many) why Puerto Rico needs and deserves freedom, sovereignty and prosperity.
A status bill that includes colonialism as an option is not decolonization.
@RepAOC & I oppose the Resident Commissioner's legislation & will keep fighting for real self-determination for Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico's colonial status is a stain on our history. It must end.
BREAKING: We have learned that @RepPabloJose plans to introduce a bill that would INCLUDE THE COLONIAL STATUS as an option for Puerto Rico.
The draft bill is in our possession—and it's shameful colonialism.
We call on all boricuas and allies to oppose it. More to come soon!
Another reason for independence: to avoid Kamala and the Dems dragging my nation into their country just because they think it’ll give them an advantage in Congress…..until they realize (too late) they just annexed a tropical Quebec that rejects American assimilation, refuses to adopt English, where support for statehood is decreasing (only held up by voter fraud and drugs for vote schemes) and where support for sovereignty is increasing, now over 43% and growing. The Dems don’t know what they are doing.
🚨 BREAKING:
Puerto Rico under Jenniffer González: campaign vehicles now reportedly linked to federal investigations, allegations of “drugs for votes” electoral schemes, and over $150 million in welfare/food stamp payments allegedly issued to deceased individuals. What next?
Corruption, incompetence, and political patronage continue draining U.S. taxpayer money while the colonial parties protect the same broken system. Puerto Rico deserves transparency, accountability, and real change.
No wonder pro-independence strategists are welcomed in Washington DC.

Our president @AlbertoMedinaPR writes in @LatNewsletter about how U.S. corruption enables and protects Puerto Rico’s own corrupt pro-statehood leaders. https://t.co/tEXwfot9HU
Today Zohran has announced historic penalties against two Bronx mega-landlords, securing $31 million in penalties and new oversight of long-delayed repairs.
The penalty is the largest ever obtained by the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
It targets the owners of Robert Fulton Terrace and Fordham Towers, where tenants have reported years of unsafe conditions, including broken elevators, vermin infestations and chronic outages of heat and hot water.
