A sitting Chief Minister has been arrested. A deputy Chief Minister---Manish Sisodia---has been in jail for nearly a year now. Three other Chief Ministers are under severe pressure---Arvind Kejriwal, Revanth Reddy, and Pinarayi Vijayan. Chief Minister Kejriwal is expecting arrest any time now. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar is also under immense pressure.

Former Chief Ministers like Bhupesh Baghel, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Akhilesh Yadav, Farooq
Abdullah and Sharad Pawar are also facing probes.
Leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi also face probes. West Bengal government is already facing a myriad number of probes by central agencies on directions of the Calcutta High Court.

In April 2023, the Supreme Court refused to frame separate guidelines for arresting opposition politicians (although an omnibus prayer, many felt it was the need of the hour). The Court had asked the opposition to come in individual cases before it. Some, like Depy CM Sisodia, did.

Despite observing that the ED's claims against Sisodia "will fall flat" after "two questions in the cross-examination", the court finally denied him bail.
The Supreme Court also expedited a hearing linked to DK Shivakumar's disproportionate assets case before the High Court. Bail for close aides of Bhupesh Baghel was also denied. Quashing petition against criminal proceedings against Chandrababu Naidu in the skill development scam case was also effectively denied (although this is a state agency case---the court delivered a split verdict).

CM Hemant Soren's case will be heard tomorrow. And so begins a long legal journey of adjournments, delays, and prolonged incarceration. Congress President Malikarjun Kharge says, if the BJP comes back to power in 2024, there will be dictatorship in the country. "This is the last chance to vote. The BJP will rule India like Putin in Russia," he says.
