Russ was an incredibly encouraging & supportive mentor who gave us freedom to pursue our own academic interests—spanning deep learning architectures, optimization, robotics, NLP, & multimodal representations—while providing hands-on expert guidance across our diverse projects.
I’ve been asked several times whether Zhilin Yang, the founder of @Kimi_Moonshot was my PhD student. The answer is yes and he is absolutely brilliant.
But I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with so many outstanding PhD students over the years. So I thought I’d brag a little about them and their career paths (of course there are also many MSc and undergraduate students, sorry if I missed anyone):

The secret behind Gemini 3?
Simple: Improving pre-training & post-training 🤯
Pre-training: Contra the popular belief that scaling is over—which we discussed in our NeurIPS '25 talk with @ilyasut and @quocleix—the team delivered a drastic jump. The delta between 2.5 and 3.0 is as big as we've ever seen. No walls in sight!
Post-training: Still a total greenfield. There's lots of room for algorithmic progress and improvement, and 3.0 hasn't been an exception, thanks to our stellar team.
Congratulations to the whole team 💙💙💙
🚨BREAKING: @GoogleDeepMind’s Gemini-3-Pro is now #1 across all major Arena leaderboards
🥇#1 in Text, Vision, and WebDev - surpassing Grok-4.1, Claude-4.5, and GPT-5
🥇#1 in Coding, Math, Creative Writing, Long Queries, and nearly all occupational leaderboards.
Massive gains over Gemini-2.5:
🔸WebDev in Code Arena: 1487 (+280 pts vs 2.5)
🔸Text: 1501 (+50 pts)
🔸Vision: 1328 (+70 pts)
🔸Arena Expert: Top-3 (just 3 pts behind #1)
Huge congrats to the @GoogleDeepMind team on this breakthrough! 👏
🚨Breaking: @GoogleDeepMind’s latest Gemini-2.5-Pro is now ranked #1 across all LMArena leaderboards 🏆
Highlights:
- #1 in all text arenas (Coding, Style Control, Creative Writing, etc)
- #1 on the Vision leaderboard with a ~70 pts lead!
- #1 on WebDev Arena, surpassing Claude for the first time
This is the first-ever sweep across text, vision, and WebDev by any model!🥇
Huge congrats to @GoogleDeepMind on this incredible breakthrough!
Gemini can generate pretty consistent gif animations too:
'Create an animation by generating multiple frames, showing a seed growing into a plant and then blooming into a flower, in a pixel art style'
Anyone who has been in this room knows that it’s never just another day in here! This space has seen the extremes of chaos and genius!
...and we ship!

Happy Wednesday everyone!
A very fun chat with Hiroaki Kitano-san, Sony CTO and creator of AIBO robot dog, about the future of AI and robotics. Happy New Year from Tokyo!
今年のお正月、ソニーグループCTOの北野宏明さんと出会うことができました。人工知能・ロボット工学の未来について楽しい会話をしました。
Thank you シェインさん @shanegJP@shaneguML for connecting us!
明けましておめでとうございます☆
Excited to share an early preview of our gemini 2.0 flash thinking model with all it's raw thoughts visible.
Here's the model trying to solve a Putnam 2024 with multiple approaches, and then self-verifies that it's answer was correct.
The new Gemini 2.0 Flash model debuts as the #3 model overall on the @lmarena_ai leaderboard, and #1, 2 or 3 in all the various subcategories. Pretty great for such a low latency model!
We’re kicking off the start of our Gemini 2.0 era with Gemini 2.0 Flash, which outperforms 1.5 Pro on key benchmarks at 2X speed (see chart below). I’m especially excited to see the fast progress on coding, with more to come.
Developers can try an experimental version in AI Studio and Vertex AI today. It is also available to try in @GeminiApp on the web today, mobile coming soon.
This took some cooking, Project Mariner is out to automate tasks in your browser!
Check out benchmark results, 90.5% on Webvoyager.
Excited for this to be released to Trusted Testers. The world as we know it is about to change—much sooner than we think :)
