According to my local MP there are no backpackers working in Port Douglas, Cairns, Tolga and the rest of FNQ.
Matt Smith claimed the current system was not working.
“The thing that we’ve discovered is, and particularly the British, they’re not coming to the regions anymore,” he said.
“They’re parking themselves in Bondi and just living their best lives … people hanging out in Coogee Beach doesn’t do us a great deal of good up here. We need people up in the regions.”
In what world does he live in?
Albo & Chalmers say they can break their promises, and it is ok to lie, because the current system is broken and unfair.
I am wondering if Australians should lie on their tax returns because the system is broken and unfair, too!
The Albanese government is a High-tax, high-spend government—just be honest about it. “Intergenerational equity” feels like spin. These policies won’t fix housing affordability, and when they run out of money, they come after yours.
According to the ex-NSW Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner for Japan and Korea, Michael Newman:
🇦🇺 Australia has 140 public servants to every 1,000 people
🇯🇵 Japan has 38 per 1,000 people.
🇦🇺 Employs 2.5 million bureaucrats, costing us $232 billion a year.
🇯🇵 Has five times our population, runs on 3.3 million bureaucrats and spends only $270 billion.
🇦🇺 17 per cent of the working age population is now on the government payroll.
🇯🇵 Just five per cent.
🇦🇺 Bureaucrats are on bigger salaries too. Per head, Aussie public servants earn an average of $93,000 versus Japan at just $76,000.
🇦🇺 At the senior executive level, federal heads of department are raking in up to $1,000,000 Aussie dollars a year.
🇯🇵 To compare with Japan, the top earning politicians in the Asian archipelago bring home about $255,000.
Mr Newman sensibly suggested that senior civil servants should be paid like private sector professionals, with a smaller base salary with performance-based rewards.
As Thomas Sowell said "It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong."
The Labor Government just keeps spending and then wonders why inflation is out of control. They are $57B over budget in the Dec MYEFO. I am expecting tax increases in the May 26 budget via stealth, ie by tinkering with tax concessions, ie capital gains discounts, a mansion tax on main residences and so on.
Prime Minister, your announcement today of an internal departmental review of law enforcement and intelligence agencies is wholly inadequate. To use an Australian colloquialism its bullshit.
It’s weak, it’s wrong, it’s an abrogation of your first and fundamental duty to protect all Australian citizens after the deadliest terrorist attack on Australian soil at Bondi beach.
Your departmental review will not go to the heart of the issues and the radicalisation within our country, which has been allowed to explode on your watch.
Prime Minister what are you afraid a Commonwealth Royal Commission will uncover?
The Commonwealth must take the lead with the most comprehensive, powerful Royal Commission possible. You supported Royal Commissions into the banks, veterans, aged care and welfare system.
Now 15 innocent souls including 10 year old Matilda have been murdered by radical Islamists and all you are prepared to commit to is an internal departmental review? It beggars belief and is the latest failure in federal leadership.
It’s not good enough to pass the buck to NSW whose Premier has already indicated he will hold a Royal Commission. Why is a Royal Commisson good enough for NSW but not the Federal Government?
No one could think that the extremist threat is limited to NSW. These are federal offences, federal responsibilities and failures at the federal level. The threat is national. You yourself have said that this terrorist attack was inspired by the Islamic State, you cannot legitimately conclude that this is a matter to be covered by a state based Royal Commission.
Anti-Jew intimidation, harassment and violence has metastasised in our country and must not be allowed to go one day longer. The tsunami of hate is not just an attack on Jewish Australians, it’s a threat to every Australian. Prime Minister enough is enough!
I thought journalists had a professional responsibility to be impartial, but it seems these days, instead of getting into politics, you just get into media and only report on your views.
@Moods1915@Baynelovessport@KosSamaras Is that not the point though? Both parties are not interested in good economic outcomes, just what will get them through to the next election.
The economy and debate about what government can do or not do is not something that can be understood by people in a focus group or polling or on people on x. People’s perspectives on this subject are influenced by their real life situation or more likely something government has done to improve their situation. That does not make it good economic policy. That is just smart politics and labor has done that better.
This is the Telstra exchange building in my suburb of Earlville. This is an eyesore and has been like this for weeks. Telstra are quick to hit their customers with late fees, but they are failing as a corporate citizen here. Please clean it up and maintain it regularly.@Telstra #telstra
I am shocked and saddened to see what’s happened to Trump. Regardless of your politics, this is sickening and should not happen. Let’s hope something like this never happens in Australia or the anywhere else again.
