The vaunted EU-US trade deal, signed by US President Donald Trump and his EU Commission counterpart Ursula von der Leyen, is not a diplomatic breakthrough.
Anchored on fantastical LNG purchase commitments of $750 billion over three years, the deal is a shared delusion: an empty gesture signed by two parties that have no intention or ability to deliver what theyโve promised.
Von der Leyen committed the EU to buy $250 billion per year of American energy (mostly LNG, plus oil, coal, refined products and possibly nuclear fuel) over three years.
No matter how you cut it, this is unattainable and both sides must know it.

LNG is inherently an insecure fuel for Europe, as @fossilfreemedia explains well in this short. Domestic renewables avoid much of its supply chain risks and volatility, and have already made inroads weaning Europeโs economy off of gas

I was disappointed to see my alma mater @BrownUniversity considering a major #LNG investment with New Fortress Energy, and @ThisIsZeroHourโs op-ed in the BDH is spot on
Investing in LNG goes against the university's climate commitments and its values
โBrown University and investors everywhere should reject investments with any ties to fossil fuels and liquified natural gas. It is time to end the era of fossil fuels.โ @ZanageeArtis for @the_herald: https://t.co/uumB0bt2aT
Looking at the contracts signed for this US LNG terminal Biden has paused on @GlobalEnergyMon. The industry plan seems to be to sell to Japan and China as much as Europe. But 'gas to China' probably doesn't play as well as 'gas to help Europe against Putin'.

[Opinion] Instead of funding the creation of largely new gas demand in the region, the EU and US would be better off doubling down on the Western Balkans' energy transition. By @ceebankwatch https://t.co/SY9cuqEPLD
