The duties required in the ninth commandment are, the preserving & promoting of truth between man & man, & the good name of our neighbor, as well as our own; appearing & standing for the truth; & from the heart, sincerely, freely, clearly, & fully, speaking the truth, & only the truth, in matters of judgment & justice, & in all other things whatsoever; a charitable esteem of our neighbors; loving, desiring, & rejoicing in their good name; sorrowing for & covering of their infirmities; freely acknowledging of their gifts & graces, defending their innocency; a ready receiving of a good report, & unwillingness to admit of an evil report, concerning them; discouraging talebearers, flatterers, & slanderers; love & care of our own good name, & defending it when need requireth; keeping of lawful promises; studying & practicing of whatsoever things are true, honest, lovely, & of good report.
That crown, the one made of thorns with the most ancient, miserable roots, had a certain shine about it (Psalm 132:18, the whole really, particularly vv 1, 11, 17-18; cf Col 1:14-15).
