We own nothing. We own a PS download code. a Spotify subscription, a Netflix password, an MS Office license. Corporations are keeping all the power and they will weaponize it when the time is right.
Remember when streaming took over cable TV? We were like, "Wow! Convenience and no commercials!" Then they slowly injected commercials back into it and took control of our viewing libraries. The convenience of digital gaming is going to follow the same pattern.
@MightyGazelle1 hopefully at least there will be some kind of middle grounds, like physical backwards compatibility, possibility to digitize physical copy, etc.
maybe they can't (or won't) really say anything until PS6 reveal and marketing cycle starts.
@PlayStation You are killing ownership. You are killing legal preservation. You are killing discoverability. You are killing publishers. You are killing developers. This is a move that might slightly improve bottom lines, but tear down every other aspect of this medium. Well done! You f*d up!
@GamesNosh secondhand market is one of the main reason of playstation's popularity in developing and poorer countries, now sony pissed them off with irreparable damage. they will either stop gaming or wait for jailbroken PS6.
proof that sony doesn't care about gamers and community at all.
@imp0pcorn@SteveMBowling@GenePark CDs market was crashing hard like a decade ago, then it's slowly growing again in recent years. point is, the industry keeps both physical and digital option alive.
if major labels stopped making CDs 10 years ago, we wouldn't get any resurgence like we see today.
I completely understand where you’re coming from, but for a lot of gamers physical discs are the only way they could afford to play games because they could get them secondhand. You can also give games to your younger siblings Which is a great way to introduce them to the games you were playing.
Most importantly though, as we saw from PlayStation this past week, if the media we buy is only digital, it can be taken away from us at a moment’s notice with no recourse. Imagine that, one day your entire library of games could be deleted overnight because technically you don’t own it.
what sucks is that you can still buy physical media for movies and music. you can still buy a CD for new albums! the options are still there. it's wild to just be like "no options from now on"
Let's say the PS6 is a digital only console (pretty much guaranteed now) and 20yrs after it's release you wanna get a game for the PS6 but they've shut down the store just like they did for the PS3/Vita. What are you going to do?
You can't go to a gamestop, a pawn shop, a flea market, ebay or whatever. This is planned obsolescence in its' final form. PlayStation now has 100% control over how you buy and play a game.
Your boy wanna sell you a game for cheap? Can't do that, gotta buy full price on PSN. Wanna give your boy a game to check out? too bad, he's gotta buy it for $70 on PSN.
This is terrible for videogame preservation and consumer rights
@themarszeppelin people are still buying CDs and vinyls tho. yes the number is getting smaller but the music labels still produce them even for new albums. the key is to support and provide a way for both mainstream and niche consumer segments.
closing one of them does not benefit anyone at all
@beyond_fps the problem is that this shift does not benefit gamers at all. consoles and games wont get cheaper, digital gamers will always buy digital no matter what and now sony screws physical buyers AND secondhand market.
sony has all the resources to support both medium. 20% is a lot!
@stephentotilo the problem is that this shift benefits NO ONE other than the execs and shareholders themselves! consoles and games wont get cheaper, digital gamers will always buy digital. now physical/secondhand market is completely fucked.
this shows sony DOES NOT CARE about gamers at all!
@putrategar2709 yes bener bang, dan komunitasnya kuat banget, at least dari yang saya liat selama ini di belanda (bisa diliat juga dari perayaan orang2 keturunan maroko di belanda kemarin yang bikin cukup chaos haha)
@tomwarren@ZhugeEX This sucks man. Xbox was widely celebrated as one of the 'willing to take a risk' and most diverse publisher in terms of genre offerings espc. after multiple rounds of acquisitions.
If the news that they will now only focus on Halo/Forza/Fallout/TES is true, it truly sucks.
