How can we advance #HealthEquity in orthopaedics for patients who speak a language other than English? 🌍
Our team outlines key strategies & implementation tasks in our latest @jbjs article.
Grateful for the team effort! 🙌 @BoneDoc95@Victohug@rodarte_valles#orthotwitter
Language matters in patient engagement for joint replacement. 🦵🗣️
Our research found significant disparities in pre-op education & PROM completion.
📝 More support needed for non-English speakers!
Thank you @OfficialJAAOS.
Grateful for the teamwork. #orthotwitter

Excited about our latest publication! AI falls short in enhancing the readability of Spanish-language orthopedic PEMs. Grateful for all the team effort! Thank you @Clinorthop for sharing our work. #orthotwitter
🌍 Health equity starts with accessible education! 🏥
AI struggles to improve the readability of Spanish orthopedic materials while maintaining accuracy. More work is needed to create culturally appropriate resources for non-English-speaking patients.

#NewPublication: A study co-authored by Linda Suleiman, MD (@LindaSuleimanMD), saw that minority patients have been shown to underutilize total knee arthroplasty (TKA) compared to non-Hispanic white patients. Specific drivers of this underutilization have yet to be identified. In this study, scientists sought to determine if racial concordance between patient and physician is associated with the surgeon’s likelihood to recommend TKA. Read the full study:

On my overnight ED call yesterday, more than 50% of the patients I cared for were Spanish speaking only. Being able to bypass the need for an interpreter streamlined their care and helped create quick rapport. Better language access leads to better health outcomes!
I had the privilege of presenting at @OrthoSummit a randomized control trial l've been working on over the past year. It was an incredible experience reconnecting with friends, learning from top orthopedic surgeons, and gaining valuable insights 👨🏻⚕️🧠💯 #OSET2024
Had an amazing time presenting our project on how racial disparities in TKA outcomes may differ across social deprivation levels at @OrthoSummit in Vegas! Huge thanks to my mentors for their support. #orthotwitter
I'm deeply honored to have Dr. Navarro write a #CORRInsights from our paper, emphasizing the critical need for further research in this area. @BoneDoc95#orthotwitter
"It is clear from Busigo Torres et al. that to fully assess this area, the definition of limited English language proficiency must be standardized," writes Ronald Navarro in a #CORRInsights. "Of course this will take time & a bit of bureaucratic advocacy." https://t.co/AGZA7NTKgb
In a systematic review, Busigo Torres et al. found that patients w/limited English proficiency were less likely to complete PROMs or use patient portals, and more likely to experience longer hospital stays & nonhome discharges. #healthequity#orthoTwitter https://t.co/51FR9Nnvfn
It's here! Start reading our August 2024 issue at https://t.co/0DaBDil0bA. This issue contains our Diversity and Disparities Symposium along with our usual mix of columns and articles. Tell us what you’re reading by tagging us or using #CORR on social media! #orthoTwitter
Had a fantastic time presenting at @southernortho1! Our project highlighted disparities in TKA outcomes in Puerto Rico🇵🇷 compared to the US mainland, potentially due to reduced healthcare funding as a US territory. Grateful for the support from my mentors. #SOA2024#orthotwitter
Today on #OrthoBuzz, we're highlighting a recent article in #JBJS, in which Escalera et al. provide an informative overview of the American Association of Latino Orthopaedic Surgeons (AALOS). Read more here:

Sleep can be vaccine for sports injuries 💤
In this study adolescent athletes who slept less than 8hrs per night were 1.7 times more likely to sustain an injury than those who slept >8hrs.
How often do we ask about our athlete's sleep? Not enough I reckon...
