83 year old buried his daughter and delivered a symphony a few months later, and now his music is topping every chart a year after. Meanwhile concerts in every city. Barely any Tamil film has come out in the last 15 years that doesn’t have a raja song playing in the background. To the point that people are putting his music in their movies out of contempt and spite hoping they get some eyeballs. Imagine coming on here every day and making hating the greatest composer the world has produced your entire personality.

It’s actually crazy because you will find tapes of Leonard Bernstein tear into Beethoven’s inability to write a fugue or being melodically weak. You’ll hear Glenn Gould criticize mozart’s inability to write counterpoint. Yet here you have someone from a back of the beyond village who can write counterpoint like Bach and harmony like Beethoven and melody like Mozart, all in the same 3-minute song, and wrap it up in dappankoothu and we’re all happy to believe that this is the sound of Tamil Nadu, because somehow it sounds like it sprung from the earth like a wildflower.

Spending your time hating on this instead of finding yourself remarkably fortunate that you live in the time of Ilaiayaraaja is a pathology too tragic to bear.

I almost can’t enjoy raja song covers because the intricate orchestration is such a fundamental part of the music for me- if you just make a cover with just the melody it feels like 75% of the song is missing, it’s like singing only every 4th note. There used to be this manjari version of kiliye kiliye some 15 years ago that was popular, but I could never get into it because only 10% of the song is in the singing.

Goodbye dots good bye @openai been trying @bot the last few days and it’s changed the game. @poteto mogged @thsottiaux what can I say. Used codex since it launched, it has steadily gotten worse every day for the last two months. Botched launched with dots, it’s so slow and lazy and does nothing- as with everything OpenAI, the more the team works on it, the worse it gets. Codex is a buggy laggy mess. Dots is a shitshow. Astra was a turd and hasn’t changed much. Sol 6.1 is whatever- also slow AF and not thorough. Between bot and Claude, everything is covered. They both use codex to operate my Mac now and that’s it. Once the plan ends it’s goodbye.
