First establish some classroom norms about accepting differences. Secondly, start normalizing the integration of various cultural differences into the classroom-there is no one size fits all and every student deserves a voice and to share their experiences. #formativechat
A1: Multiculturalism shouldn't be something that is taught "outside" the curriculum. It needs to be integrated daily to have an impact. It's time that it starts appearing in our math & science classes regularly. #formativechat
Mistakes happen-Don't forget to laugh at yourself when you forget to mute yourself or share your screen. Shift to let students retake assignments, extend deadlines, & have some choice in their learning-make it about learning & not the grade #rethink_learning
Bonus Q (slow chat) How can we humanize teaching and learning during a pandemic?

A3: In my anatomy classes we are trying a gratitude "experiment" where you write down 3 things you are grateful for every day for 30 days to positively train our brains. It helps them take a break and put a positive spin on things! #rethink_learning
A2: Not being able to safely complete science labs, and missing out on time to give my students real extra help has been challenging. I have, however, enjoyed my students becoming more literate with technology and will continue to incorporate this into my planning in the future.
Q2. Teaching and learning has been affected.
How has your teaching changed or stayed the same? What would you like to change?
What has surprised you?
#rethink_learning
#rethink_learning Hello! I'm a high school independent school science teacher in Charlotte, NC. My current situation is hybrid and its a grind to Thanksgiving break!
Q4: Remote learning has been depicted by the media as unsuccessful & fearful and this has painted education in a dismal light. What opportunities does switching to a remote setting offer you, your students & community in terms of learning, growth, and resiliency? #mtholyokechat
A3: I think when we see someone perform a negative behavior, we first need to think about why we are perceiving it that way & then allow that individual to explain "why" that is the chosen behavior #mtholyokechat
A2: I've been thinking a lot about the role of grades and assessments in the midst of this transition. I still don't have a solid answer on this, but what I do know is feedback & having individual conversations about goals/growth is central to equitable grading #mtholyokechat
A1: I think that we need to start by realizing that we aren't the ones to necessarily build community. It takes everyone (students and parents included!) to build community. We need to start with communication and asking genuine questions about each other #mtholyokechat
A5: I’m inspired by my students of color who are bravely making instagram accounts calling out institutions for their racism. While I’m working on continuing to learn more about equity, I’m also advocating for change in my institution #leaderedchat
A4: Families want to be heard, AND they want to know that we are hearing their children and respecting their experience. We need to be transparent with families that the difficult conversations are necessary for ALL of our students to succeed #leaderedchat
A3: We need to reimagine our curriculum. The science curriculum in particular is long overdue for change...I plan on adding in new role models for my students this year by honoring scientists of color, scientists in the LGBTQ community and female scientists #leaderedchat
The first step is for teachers to really evaluate their own internal biases and break down those barriers first. Kids can see right through us when we aren’t real with them...they want teachers who listen AND who take an active role against bias in the classroom #leaderedchat
A1: Equity is treating everyone equal AND giving everyone access to equal opportunities. In a world that is extremely inequitable, equity-minded practices is about breaking down barriers that are preventing all my students from succeeding. #equitychat
