@GCSE_Macbeth Do you have the old EMC book “Klondike Kate”? Some of the contents are outdated but there are good pieces in there. Bill Bryson is an obvious one, so you’ve probably thought of that. But chunks of that always go well. “I come from Des Moines. Someone has to.”

@brendanryan07 @CarolAtherton8 @BarbaraBleiman I completely agree. As I am sure would most English teachers! I think it’s because context is easiest to award when reading at speed, or if you are inexperienced, through a specific reference to a date or individual.

@brendanryan07 @CarolAtherton8 @BarbaraBleiman So students should seemingly write dross for the first page and save sophisticated vocab for the end as that’s the only place where they can get credit for it, as long as they get onto the 4th side of the booklet. That genuinely seems true to me.

While we’re at it - they could define what context students are expected to know for literary texts rather than redefining this every year through the markscheme for that year’s papers. Continually saying students do not need specific historical context yet I see dates
