ATTENTION MR. BESSENT, 2.0: YOU ARE COMING UP SHORT ON YOUR OWN '3-3-3' GOALS

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been attacking financial journalists on Twitter [X] this morning. It's petty, but let's judge a man not by what he says. Let's judge him on what he accomplishes.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, Bessent laid out a '3-3-3' economic agenda for his prospective administration. This was a promise to achieve annual economic growth of 3%, reduce the federal budget deficit to 3% of gross domestic product, and increase daily output of oil by 3 million barrels per day.

President Trump's economic co-pilot is failing on every count:

-- Growth in economic output as measured by real gross domestic product slowed to a 1.95% annualized rate during President Trump's first 18 months in office. That's a slower growth rate than the average 3.2% rate when Biden was in office, though the Biden rate was bolstered by a post-Covid pandemic recovery. The Bessent 1.95% growth rate is a touch slower than the 2.0% growth rate during Obama's eight year term in office.

-- The budget deficit is estimated by the Congressional Budget Office to be 5.8% in the fiscal year that ends in September, nearly double the Treasury Secretary's promised rate. In order to reach 3% of GDP, the budget deficit would need to be nearly a trillion dollars smaller. Instead, it will rise next year, in part because of the cost of funding the war in the Persian Gulf. I see little evidence that the present administration, or anyone in Washington for that matter, has a credible plan to reduce the red ink that's spilling forth like a geyser from Washington on a daily basis.

-- Domestic oil production averaged 13.71 million barrels daily in May, up 0.57 million from 13.14 million in January 2025. Again, short of the goal. Implicit in the promise on oil production was a promise that energy costs would ease. They have not.

On one count that matters to many Americans, the economy is delivering a number with a "3" in it: The inflation rate was 3.7% higher in June that it was a year earlier, as measured by the Federal Reserve's preferred personal consumption expenditure price index.

I have no desire to get political, but when a politician attacks honest people who I know and respect, that bugs me. It's petty, and meant purely as distraction.

There is no shortage of issues regarding FIFA. Let me start by clarifying what some of these are from an FA perspective, in particular that of Jordan going into a World Cup for the first time.
We are a small country with a minimal budget for our FA and had to deal with enormous hurdles. First, getting our fans into the USA: not all were granted VISAS, even though they had tickets -which we also know were sold at exorbitant prices. Secondly, we are being taxed by the US govt through FIFA for our participation. Money that should go to players and staff. This was not the case for those who played and set up camp in Canada and Mexico. But we happened to be in the USA so now we face these huge costs in taxes for having participated.
Thirdly we have been waiting for reward money for our players since December for the Arab cup in Qatar, which is a FIFA event. The money our team should receive for having reached the final has not been delivered yet, while at the same time FIFA brags about how many billions they have in reserve.
It is clear the problem really is with leadership. For months, FIFA has been refusing to help us on any of these or other matters- until it was verbally communicated to me during the World Cup that if I endorsed Infantino it would go a long way to helping our FA out.
We pride ourselves in Jordan in upholding ethical values. We did not endorse him before and certainly will not now. But the whole situation amounts to blackmail and we refuse to give in to that.

The biggest hole in society today is strong nuclear and extended families.

The number one goal of my maternal grandmother was that her (8) kids would be friends with each other for life and that their kids would be close too.

My mother and her brothers and sisters followed through and I have the incredible fortune of having 20+ cousins who are like brothers and sisters to me. Part of what made that possible was a concerted effort to get everyone together as frequently as possible. Sunday dinners, holidays and during Summer vacation.

When we get together there are three generations intermingling and this creates an environment where norms are implicitly and explicitly expressed and passed down to the younger generations.

This has created a somewhat unspoken standard and checks and balances within the family that make everyone strive to be better.

I feel incredibly blessed to have been born into my family and honored to contribute to it with children of my own. And I truly believe that if more people put a concerted effort in like my grandmother did with her children, a lot of the stresses, anxieties and evils that exist today would be greatly reduced.

Family is everything and it needs to be a more of a focus in today’s world.
