The expressive lines drawn around things in cartoon strips are called EMANATA. The term was coined by the cartoonist Mort Walker—who also named GRAWLIXES (symbols used in place of swearing), SOLRADS (lines radiating from the sun), and WAFTAROMS (wavy lines drawn above hot food).
