When I was 10-12 my dad worked 2 full time jobs so my mom could stay home with my baby sister and to pay off hospital fees from her birth.

He got home from the first job around 3. We had early dinner as a family and then he went to his 2nd job.

I was the oldest and the "man" of the house until my dad got home in the early morning.

There were a few nights where my mom heard a noise on the side of the house. She would then send me out with a flashlight and a knife to investigate.

I remember being scared and excited to go confront who or what was making the noise.

There was never anything there.

I later learned there was never even a noise.
