Le Pape François aura attendu de pouvoir vivre Pâques et la joie de la résurrection pour rendre son âme à Dieu. Lui aussi, comme Jésus-Christ qu’il a servi toute sa vie, aura donc porté la Croix et l’Église jusqu’au bout de ses forces.
Au-delà du deuil qui les touche et de la peine que je partage avec eux, tous les catholiques du monde sont très certainement frappés et émus par cette concordance des temps. Ceux qui croient au Ciel y verront un signe d’espérance, ceux qui n’y croient pas une simple coïncidence, mais je pense que tous les hommes et toutes les femmes de bonne volonté ou de simple bonne foi reconnaîtront l’œuvre du Pape François, notamment dans sa volonté de tourner l’Église vers les marges de la société autant que du monde, et donc souvent très loin du vieil Occident chrétien…
Je veux aussi retenir qu’il aura délivré son dernier message pour dénoncer « urbi et orbi » la résurgence très inquiétante d’un antisémitisme que l’on croyait disparu et contre lequel, après l’avoir trop longtemps toléré, l’Église catholique n’a cessé de s’élever avec force. 
J’ai eu l’honneur de pouvoir rencontrer en famille puis en particulier le Pape François au début de son pontificat. Je conserve le souvenir d’un entretien joyeux et profond,mais surtout d’un homme qui, bien qu’assis sur le siège de Pierre, successeur de tant de papes et garant de la continuité de l’Église autant que de la perpétuation de son message, disait au moment où vous le quittiez : « Aidez-moi », « Priez pour moi ».
Aujourd’hui, alors que l’état du monde suscite une perpétuelle inquiétude, nous pouvons tous souhaiter que le Pape François repose en paix.
