Hermit, a practical deterministic operating system, is now #OpenSource. Explore how Hermit uses an emulation layer on top of the Linux kernel to help solve issues with debugging, concurrency and a common problem for developers—flaky tests: https://t.co/DFv3PAoTbs
@patrickc@paulg The capability is there! Pernosco and Windows TTD can answer @patrickc's query easily. https://t.co/OcFZLbvRoz shows how nice it can be with UI integration.
At @Meta we're working on the problem too -- and post-facto dynamic analysis can go beyond just replay.

@johnregehr I wonder how many of those examples in the blog were made with a dedicated ascii art editor. All? Few? I was surprised by how good the editors are, recently using Monodraw on Mac when illustrating a GC algorithm.
@ccshan@IULuddy@kinesisergo Oh, I didn’t realize I left one in my office. It’s largely because I use MacOS Dvorak layout and that requires remapping a bunch of punctuation keys, plus opinionated use of the precious thumb keys.
Neel Krishnaswami is one of the nicest people I know, and one of my favorite collaborators ever. If you want to study type systems, he's a fantastic person to do a Ph.D. or postdoc with, and he's hiring! https://t.co/ByAYhNPeYf
@samth@ShriramKMurthi@RanjitJhala Didn’t mean to imply not being “cool”, should have included “;-)” after “!”. Got it now re unsound decision procedures.
@carloangiuli@samth@TaliaRinger @jonmsterling @josecalderon I do think MIT has a pretty different culture in this respect. I don’t think I saw much adversarial questioning @ CSAIL — except Rinard who just makes it *fun*, or if Stallman would pop in to decry the employer of the speaker.
@samth@TaliaRinger @jonmsterling @josecalderon Remind me to tell you a story about @rrnewton's POP seminar some time... I'm not sure if he remembers the incident, but I've been laughing about it for years (not at Ryan's expense, to be clear!!)
@polynoamial Absolutely. But also a significant portion of this seems to be mental limits on remembering people — I recall “XYZ’s group”, which has been around for decades, but do I remember every PhD student who came through? (Even those that didn’t stay in research?)
There's an unfortunate tendency to undervalue the work of PhD students and assign excessive credit to the senior professor. This is especially bad with journalists (one even called me a "worker bee"). The title "Research Assistant" shouldn't be taken literally.
@notypes @keith_analog (Analogous to what people have said about HW description or data parallel DSLs. Cost in restrictions or complexity, but definitely some automagical parallelism.)
@notypes @keith_analog If you throw into the pot whole program compilation techniques like Urweb and MLton, plus you largely eliminate GC / use linear types... Then the added complexity costs something, but you’d be getting closer to the implicit parallelism dream.
@wilbowma Curious what you went with. I read some articles on podcasting microphones/headsets and ended up with an Audio-Technica BPHS1 Broadcast Stereo Headset — very happy with it.
