America lost a hero today.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom was only 20 years old.

She was serving in our National Guard on Thanksgiving, protecting people she never met, when she was ambushed near the White House. She has now died from her wounds.

She should still be alive.
She should still be with her family.
She should never have been put in this danger.

This attack was targeted. It was carried out by an Afghan national who traveled across the country to murder American soldiers. ISIS channels praised it within hours. Federal officials are treating this as a terrorism investigation.

Our leaders failed her. The security system failed her. The immigration pipeline that let her killer into this country failed her. And while she stood guard for all of us, the people in charge could not even keep her safe on American soil.

Sarah was a brave young woman who showed up to serve on a holiday when most people were home. She had her whole life ahead of her. Now her parents are spending Thanksgiving grieving their daughter.

Rest in peace, Sarah.

America will remember your name.
We will honor you by demanding accountability and by refusing to accept a country where our own soldiers are hunted in our capital city.
