Healthcare doesn’t have to be the giant industry it is in the U.S. today.

Imagine 100 years ago, when doctors were solo practitioners and hospitals were run by local communities.

In some countries, it still works this way.

When I lived in Belgium, if you called the doctor’s office, the doctor often answered the phone themselves.

Healthcare there operates as small businesses—typically one provider and a couple of office staff.
