In Sinclair Lewis's novel, "It Can't Happen Here" the fascist dictator Buzz Windrip promises to pay everyone $5,000 if elected. Of course the working classes, the "uneducated," believe him and overwhelmingly vote for Windrip even though, as it turns out, the $5,000 checks never arrive. Now we have our own fascist dictator promising to pay everyone $5,000 if they keep the fascists in power. Amazing. Another example, I suppose, of life imitating art.
