Your reminder that the S A R S - CoV-2 pandemic is not over. It's never been over. It's never been declared over by world health authorities. C O V I D (re)infections are particularly high right now. The average person has been infected 6 times. This isn't sustainable when you study the impacts. Protect yourself and others by wearing a high-quality mask (e.g., N95). Please stop acting like it's all a hoax.
Covid is surging in Northern California. I have a friend there and her whole family came down with it. Symptoms are miserable, flu-ish, fevers, vomiting, headache, body aches, fatigue.
This new variant is NOT milder.
Prevent infection and spread! 📢 🦠😷
I sat down for a distanced coffee with two colleagues last week and... well, just read this:
First off they started talking about all of the new health problems they and everyone else were having. I just listened at that point.
Then they moved on to how people are angrier, slower to understand, have more emotional problems, and less impulse control, and how this is reflected right the way across society from households to parliaments.
I barely said a thing until they used the magic phrase 'since the pandemic'.
So I said, "Yes. So many of those health problems you've mentioned are made more likely by covid infections. So of course there's going to be an increase in them, because everyone keeps catching Covid. And of course there's going to be repercussions for mental health and wellbeing and cognitive function, because Covid infections make all those problems more likely too. There is study after study after study that demonstrates this."
And the reply?
Wait for it.
"If those studies are right, wouldn't we be seeing an effect right the way across society?"
And actually I was so gobsmacked by that that I had no idea what to say in reply straight away, because they had literally been describing the effect right the way across society and wondering what could have caused it.
But then I told them about the measured increased sickness absence in kids, nhs staff, civil servants. I told them about the increase in disability payment approvals. I told them about the increase in expected mortality rates in age groups with lower vaccination rates. I told them about the increases in multiple secondary infections.
And they said...
"But you can't prove that was all caused by covid."
And I said it's not all caused by covid infections, but Covid infections make all those things worse.
And they reluctantly agreed to that, but they're still not willing to consider changing the way they live to make any difference.
One of my oldest friends asked me how I'm in such good shape now.
I told him I mask everywhere I go indoors and in some circumstances outdoors. I told him I avoid catching Covid.
He laughed and said that there may be something in it.
He's looking pretty ill. 😥
I sat down with five colleagues, mostly around about my age, some a bit younger, at the weekend to catch up.
The first ten minutes was their health problems.
TIAs.
Stroke.
Heart attacks.
Atrial fibrillation.
And that was just the 'big' things.
I’d like to reiterate how difficult it is to have granola infected with salmonella. It’s even more difficult than chili peppers, and no, it’s not “foreign producers” that are the problem. It’s quality control and standards not being enforced.
About 25% of kids are now chronically absent from school. Before the pandemic, it was about 15%.
That equates to millions more kids missing school, with illness being the most common listed cause.
But sure, Covid is just a cold.
So many people think “I recovered” means COVID left no trace.
But if brain scans can still detect structural and chemical changes after infection, maybe we should stop confusing the absence of symptoms with the absence of impact.
The doctor who claimed that vaccines cause autism lost his medical license for faking for the study. But his lies and the damage he did to public health persist long after his paper was pulled. This is why science communication is so difficult; all it takes is one grifter.
Long Covid is a chronic immune disorder, a vascular disorder & an inflammatory disorder.
What causes it? Covid infection.
This isn’t news. Hundreds of thousands of medical journal papers about it. But here it is in the actual news…
This is exactly what some of us were worried about.
People who died of unrelated causes after a mild Covid infection still harbored the virus.
“Learning to live with COVID” basically means just that, quite literally.
Significant implications for personal & public health here.
We have known this since 2020. Research continues to confirm that a single COVID infection can permanently destroy your immune system and bc it’s not politically cool to care about we are doing absolutely nothing to fast track treatments.
