Making a unique choral dataset in a collective way takes many hours, many phone calls, zoom calls and slack channels but also many cups of tea and conversations and jokes and new friendships that come along with a classic road trip…
The dataset is now the largest available to researchers, future proofed by recording each choir ambisonically to provide precise recall of the sound in each room
This dataset is owned by the choirs in question through a new IP structure we created alongside @SerpentineUK Future Art Ecosystems team to allow for common ownership of AI data
And an extra special shout out to @VivLaNova and @jen_gineered for turning the #datatrustexperiment into something palpable that can hopefully set a precedent for training models in the future..
It’s been an epic journey - (literally across the entire UK) - and now The Call is finally open to the public. 🌱 Special shout out to all the choirs who contributed their time, effort and energy to this experimental project. It was so much fun to work with you all! 🌱
As the media evolves, so does what we consider the art. I spent the summer on tour with @Ruthywaters, @hollyherndon & @matdryhurst staging data creation performances w/ the loveliest choristers. Soon, developing training methods as an art form will be standard practice.
From Carnoustie to Belfast to Penarth (and many places in between) this yr I've mostly been working on the production of 'The Call' by @hollyherndon and @matdryhurst with @eva__jaeger and the rest of the Serpentine Arts Technologies team
Opening the 4th October at @serpentineUK
Ted Chiang's essay made some good points about art and intentionality, but it is premature to debate about AI making art. For now, AI doesn't exist autonomously. Humans make art with AI models trained on humans.
We train our own models on our own datasets. This project took 18 months to prompt. I see making models as art.
Calling all choristers!
We have an open call for choirs across the UK to participate in a recording project we are doing with the Serpentine London this summer. If you are interested please comment with the name of your choir and our team will be in touch.
Future Art Ecosystem 4 on art and public AI is out!
Congratulations to @VivLaNova @eva33313 @aldmilne@SerpentineUK@matdryhurst@hollyplus_ and all the stellar contributors.
Thank you for terraforming promising futures✨
