🌍 Global Week for Action on NCDs 2026 is here! 🌍

From today, 31 August – 4 September, advocates, communities, and organizations worldwide unite under the theme: Time to Lead. (#LeadOnNCDs)

Prof. Joseph Mucumbitsi, Chairperson of Rwanda NCD Alliance and Board Member of @ncdalliance, reminds us: “It’s time to lead by bridging the global commitments of the 2025 political declaration with national actions to reduce the NCD burden by 2030.”

This year, Leadership is in Focus — governments must turn promises into measurable progress, while communities and people with lived experience continue to drive accountability and action.
NCDs remain the #1 cause of death and disability globally. Without urgent action, deaths could rise to 52 million annually by 2030. The time to act is now.

Joseph Rukelibuga reached a hospital in Kigali just minutes after having a stroke. But it took hours to confirm his diagnosis. By then, it was too late for thrombolysis.

His story shows that getting to a hospital quickly is only the first step. Patients also need quick assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

His experience highlights the need for:

✅ Clear stroke-care pathways
🚑 Better emergency transport
🏠 Better support from hospital to home

The first National Dialogue on #NCDs in Rwanda is an important step. But as the dialogue closes, I think the most important conversation should actually begin.

We have heard the right words: commitment, accountability, sustainable financing, prevention, access and delivery.

Now, what will those words mean for the patient sitting in a health centre tomorrow?

-What specific commitments were made?
-Who is responsible for delivering them?
-What resources have been allocated?
-What are the deadlines?
-And how will the public measure progress?

For people living with hypertension, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and other NCDs, the success of this dialogue should ultimately be felt through earlier diagnosis, reliable access to medicines and services, affordable long-term care and less financial pressure on families.

As the only health magazine in #Rwanda, we would strongly encourage the stakeholders to publish a clear NCD action and accountability scorecard following this dialogue, one that tells the public what was agreed, who is responsible, how it will be financed and when results should be expected.

Because dialogue is important.

But in public health, the real measure of leadership is what changes for the patient after the meeting ends.

As we conclude the first National Dialogue on NCDs 2026, Rwanda NCD Alliance extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to making this important dialogue a success.

Under the theme “Leadership in Focus: From Commitments to Delivery: Advancing Multi-Sectoral Accountability and Sustainable Financing for NCDs in Rwanda,” today’s discussions brought together diverse voices to reflect on progress, identify gaps and explore practical solutions to accelerate Rwanda’s NCD response.

We are grateful to:

The dialogue may be ending, but the work continues.

Mr. Manzi Emmanuel, Health Specialist at @unicefrw, emphasized that NCD commitments must translate into action across every level of the health system and contribute to achieving the SDGs.

At the #NCDs2026 National Dialogue, he highlighted progress in prioritizing NCDs in Rwanda while calling for stronger prevention, early detection, person-centred care and health-system preparedness.

He stressed that vulnerable groups, including people living with NCD-related disabilities, must not be left behind.

Dr. Alexis Rulisa from @RSSB_Rwanda stressed that sustainable NCD care requires sustainable health financing.

At the #NCDs2026 National Dialogue, he called for greater investment in health promotion, prevention and early detection to reduce the costly burden of advanced NCDs.

He also emphasized that the sustainability of CBHI depends on strong domestic financing and community participation.

During the #NCDs2026 National Dialogue, he noted progress through @RSSB_Rwanda health insurance coverage (CBHI) for NCD care, helping reduce the financial burden of treatment for people living with NCDs.
