Amino acids, peptides, and proteins represent different scales of the same basic thing, which is encoded by small stretches of DNA called genes.

Genes provide the blueprints for arranging amino acids into chains.

While short chains act as signaling peptides, longer and more complex chains form proteins, which function as the essential biological machinery for all life on Earth.

Ultimately, DNA serves as the universal source code for constructing every functional tool within a cell.
