Imagine waking up tomorrow with £1,000,000 in your bank account...
Spoiler: You still wouldn’t be rich.
During COVID, the Bank of England created £450 billion out of thin air. But printing money doesn't create wealth, it just creates £40 coffees, £20M houses, and hands you the bill through inflation.
This is why inflation is really just taxation without legislation.
@JamesCleverly@RebeccaHarrisMP They’re like the opposition from the old Eastern Bloc during the Cold War - they’re for show to give legitimacy but essentially agree with the regime on everything
The UK's grid is doing something pretty remarkable today.
☀️ Solar: 31.5%
💨 Wind: 56.7%
🌱 Renewables: 88.5%
⛽ Gas: Just 11%
⚡ Power price: -£4.22/MWh
We're generating more electricity than we need, exporting the surplus, and wholesale prices have gone negative. Clean energy isn't just about cutting emissions - it's reshaping the economics of electricity.
I taught history in a MAT and the curriculum was intentionally designed to include Empire from 17th - 20th C in KS3. We also had the Arab conquests included in our Y8 curriculum
Happily, *all* students in Key Stage 3 in state schools have to study the British Empire, where a required theme is 'ideas, political power, industry and empire: Britain, 1745–1901'. There are then optional modules at KS4 in this area, which many schools do.
People who (like ZP) attended fee-paying schools that do not follow this curriculum may have had different experiences, but state schools all teach this area. Alternatively, it's not uncommon for people to forget things they were taught at school and then didn't revisit afterwards in their lives or careers.
Lee Kuan Yew:
“Air conditioning was a most important invention for us, perhaps one of the signal inventions of history. It changed the nature of civilization by making development possible in the tropics. Without air conditioning you can work only in the cool early-morning hours or at dusk. The first thing I did upon becoming prime minister was to install air conditioners in buildings where the civil service worked. This was key to public efficiency."
The problem with left wing politics is they are completely out of ideas.
All their traditional progressive issues have been solved. Equal pay, equal rights, gay rights etc are all solved. Welfare and NHS funding is at record levels. Social housing is one of the highest in the OECD.
All they have is more of the same and solving problems that don't need solving.
At the same time they are completely incapable of addressing the real issues facing the country. Energy costs, planning regulation, migration, welfare reform, NHS reform etc.
Burnham isn't going to change a thing. It will be more of the same, just with a Northern accent.
@griffitha@iealondon They also don’t have a minimum wage but collective bargaining agreements between employers and trade unions. Could something similar work in the UK?
The UK borrowed almost as much in May 2026 alone (£23.3bn), as it did during the entire 2018/19 fiscal year (£23.5bn).
This is a slow motion disaster and almost no one is talking about it.
@JimBethell I worked for an MP in 2018 and had a constituent who worked on National Stroke Model. He showed us studies showing shingle vaccine could tackle dementia. Wrote to Health minister at time - they weren’t convinced and declined to look into it…
Every life matters.
One law. One standard. For everyone.
This is about justice, for Henry, for his family and for all our children. They deserve better.
Labour won’t win Britain’s future by fighting old wars or recycling old orthodoxies.
Nor will it do so through technocratic detachment from the lives people actually live.
The answers must be new, but they must also be Labour.

@ajcdeane I find the devolved Mayors also get a free ride with the media - they’ve all got cash from central govt they can spend which makes them popular.
In the last year, the world has printed 9.3% more money.
Global M2 money supply has reached $141T in 2026.
When inflation starts to run hotter again, they will blame it on Iran and other proximate factors.
But the root driver is the money printer has been running hot for the last year. Where?
China increased their money supply by 13.6% in the last 12 months. Their M2 is now $50T, making it the largest global driver of fiat inflation.
US growth in M2 is just 4.6% over the last 12 months, making the US comparatively responsible. (But make no mistake, this means your dollars have been debased by almost 1/20th of their value in just a year.)
Since we live in a global economy, we're subject to the aggregate impact of GLOBAL money printing. The US has been accustomed to being the largest monetary base and therefore largely controlling global debasement.
But China's money supply is now 2x as large as the USA's. Your savings are being debased by Chinese monetary policy decisions and you have no control.
Nobody asked your permission. Nobody told you it was happening.
But your savings just got diluted by 9.3% in one year.
Note: I'm currently updating the Global Asset Landscape for 2026 (see prior tweet). It will be out in the next few weeks, stay tuned!
