In case anyone needed yet another reason to oppose ALPR technology, let me take you for a trip to KCMO for my Friday afternoon.

I attempted to get out of town for the weekend, instead I was one of at least three drivers who became hit-and-run victims at 3:19:40 this afternoon.

We were sitting in standstill traffic in the left lane of northbound Interstate 35 before Front Street (last exit before the Bond Bridge).

I heard a crash behind me and looked in my mirror only to see a split second glimpse of Ford Fusion that was now dragging along the side of my car.

My side mirror took it the hardest, with the mirror glass scratching down my hood and the mirror cap being thrown over my hood and into traffic to my right.

The paper Missouri temp tag just blowing in the breeze on the fleeing Fusion.

He hit at least the car behind me, my car, and the pickup truck in front of me.

I was able to get across all lanes and exit to Front Street.

No one else stopped, at least not at Front Street.

I'm fine and my car could be so much worse than it is, but still completely avoidable and infuriating that people this shitty are permitted to roam the earth while doing financial damage to others.

I called @kcpolice to figure out where I needed to go to make a report.

After my call immediately went to an automated voice saying that everyone is busy on other calls (at 3:21 p.m.), I got a human call taker who was very friendly; she asked at least twice if I was injured, made sure my car was drivable, and that I was now off of the Interstate safely.

KCPD doesn't respond to non-injury crashes, not even when there's a hit-and-run. Fine, I get it, you're busy.

The nearest police station, KCPD HQ was already closed for the day. Why are you closed before 4 p.m.?

Central Patrol, 1200 Linwood, was the next closest place for me to make a report. Five miles and 12 minutes in the opposite direction of where I was trying to go. Fine, you're busy, I'll go there.

No complaints about Central Patrol. The civilian employee at the desk was very good and again, asked me if I was injured. She had me fill out the paperwork, explained KCPD's process, and answered several questions for me.

Now comes my issue with KCPD and reporting a hit-and-run.

I have a @Garmin dash cam recording 4K video.

KCPD doesn't want that video, a screen grab of the fleeing vehicle, or a single picture of my damage.

My dash cam captured a brief view of the Missouri temp tag, as it blew in the breeze. I can clearly make out the last five characters of what looks like a seven character tag.

Last five are 8RC7X and the paper tag is valid until 10/12/26.

Why in the world do police departments need ALPR tech if they refuse to use it to identify someone who just hit at least three vehicles, easily committing at least two felonies (the car behind me took a harder hit than I did).

I've already done the math for my car and there's more than $1,000 in damages (Class E felony). That's parts alone and doesn't include any body shop labor or paint.

As great as law enforcement claims ALPR technology is, KCPD can't be bothered to run a less than 30 second search for a temp tag that shows those five characters and is on a silver Ford Fusion to identify a felon?

I know KCPD has much more serious crime issues, but this is a garbage policy!

If I lied and claimed an injury that wasn't visible, or if I called @MSHPTrooperA, would this have been handled differently?

If someone is this careless, its only a matter of time before they do hurt someone. Proactive policing used to be a real thing that departments did!

I'm furious at the unknown driver who did this, and I'm incredibly frustrated with KCPD for having such a garbage policy that they don't even pretend to investigate a multi-vehicle crash, with a fleeing driver, on the highway.
