App-based taxi services have adopted a new strategy to exploit customers.

Initially, fares are set at ₹180 or more for a specific destination. However, when you try to book the cab, the app states that no driver is accepting the ride at that fare and prompts you to increase it. The increment options range from ₹10 to ₹50, meaning you ultimately end up paying ₹250 or more for the ride.

App-based cab drivers are supposed to adhere to government-fixed fares, but they currently seem to be operating above these regulations. There is no cap on the per-kilometer charges they can levy.

Similarly, while auto-rickshaws have minimum base charges, most are now part of these app-based services, allowing them to easily overcharge customers.

The Transport Department remains silent on this exploitation by operators. Commuters are being brazenly robbed with what appears to be the active support of the government.

Furthermore, the fares between Uber and Ola vary significantly for the exact same destination. For example, traveling from KR Circle to Seshadripuram in the evening costs ₹295 on Uber, while Ola charges ₹220.

The Transport Minister seems adept at making these operators bend to his will, yet it is the public that is taken advantage of.

Bangaloreans are made to suffer across almost every service they utilize, and the government won't act unless we raise our voices loudly.

Bangaloreans must launch a vigorous campaign to end this commuter exploitation.

As we see the Congress party get into a paralysed state in Karnataka, and as we hear big, small and retired leaders offer their spin and solution to the emerging situation, I am reminded of a saying often used in my native Udaipur.
