Yesterday, Sanghis targeted Maulana Azad. So I performed a semi-deep dive into his work as Education Minister. 

I guarantee that no education minister, let alone any minister, has accomplished as much as Maulana Azad. 

Bookmark this so that the next time a Sanghi barks, you can hurl these facts at them.

This will be a long read. Because the man did too much work. 

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad served as India's first Education Minister from 1947 to 1958, during which several key educational institutions were established or significantly developed under his leadership. 

1. Establishment of Premier Educational Institutions: 
Azad’s vision for India included creating world-class institutions to foster scientific, technical, and cultural progress.

IIT Kharagpur (1951):
Azad was instrumental in founding India’s first IIT in Kharagpur, West Bengal, inaugurated on August 18, 1951. Inspired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), it was established to train engineers and scientists for India’s industrial growth.

On a side note, credit for IITs is primarily attributed to Nehru, which I now believe is an exaggeration. It simply couldn't have happened without Azad.  As Prime Minister, he deserves recognition. But Azad deserves the most credit.

IIT Bombay (1958):
Established with Soviet assistance, this was the second IIT set up during Azad’s tenure, expanding the network of technical institutes to meet regional needs.

Azad supported the recommendations of the Sarkar Committee (1946), which proposed a chain of IITs across India to produce skilled technical personnel. His leadership ensured the groundwork for this model, though subsequent IITs (Madras and Kanpur in 1959) were established after his death.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore:
Though founded in 1909, Azad elevated IISc’s role as a premier research institution. He emphasized advanced scientific research, positioning IISc as a hub for postgraduate studies and innovation, akin to the IITs.

School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi (1955):
Azad oversaw the creation of SPA to address the need for specialized education in architecture and urban planning, aligning with India’s post-independence infrastructure development goals.

Central Institute of Education, Delhi:
Established to train teachers and conduct educational research, this institute later became part of the University of Delhi. It reflected Azad’s focus on improving the quality of education through trained educators.

Other Institutions:
Azad supported the development of the Faculty of Technology at the University of Delhi and laid the foundation for institutions like the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Sahitya Akademi (1954), which promoted cultural and literary education alongside technical advancements.

2. Institutional Frameworks for Education

Azad’s tenure saw the creation of regulatory and funding bodies to strengthen India’s education system:

University Grants Commission (UGC) (1953):
Azad established the UGC to coordinate, fund, and maintain standards in higher education. The UGC was critical in supporting universities and technical institutes like the IITs, ensuring academic quality and financial sustainability.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) (1945, Strengthened in 1950s):
Azad revitalized the AICTE, which became the apex body for regulating technical education, including engineering colleges and polytechnics. This ensured standardization and quality control in technical institutes.

Secondary Education Commission (1952–53):
Chaired by Dr. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, this commission was set up to reform secondary education. Azad used its recommendations to advocate for vocational training, science education, and curriculum modernization to prepare students for higher technical education.

1. I fight not only for Muslim rights, but for all human rights.
2. I don't just support the LGBTQ community; I also consider myself an ally.
3. I am dead against Sanghis, but that does not imply I will tolerate dehumanization of Hindus in any circumstance. Also, I oppose Islamists.
4. I shall always consider myself an ally of all oppressed and persecuted groups, including Dalits, Advasis, women, minorities, people of color, poor or any other oppressed class or group. I don't fight for them, I fight for me, what I believe in. Nobody owes me anything as I recognize my privilege.
5. To the tone police. I will fight dirty if necessary and to the extent that my conscience allows. The oppressor should never feel that my kindness and compassion can be used against me.
6. This is an ideological struggle for me. A struggle for who I am.
7. Everyone and everything is open to criticism, with the exception of hate speech and sadistic humiliation. However, it is not always black and white; sometimes intention is important; if your intention is nasty, the debate becomes meaningless.
8. Unless proven otherwise, my first line of support will always be for a woman. As a rule, this is one of the rare generalizations that mostly works.
9. While I dislike generalizations, I see how they might be used in mass communication to hit back against oppressors. I'll generalize when it helps to make my point.
10. I understand intersectionality; for example, a Muslim woman experiences more oppression than a Muslim man. Yadavs are more oppressed than Agarwals. And in a complex case an educated Brahmin Savarna woman can hold more power than a Muslim man. Nothing is black and white, nothing is binary.
11. I believe there are no perfect solutions in life; all we can do is make things better. It is easy to take an extremely moral stance in a debate, but it is nearly impossible to carry out. I want to strive for what is achievable rather than what is ideal, while yet recognizing what is ideal.
12. I strive for modern progressive values; my opinion may change in 5 years, as nothing is fixed since I believe morality changes through better understanding and empathy. Humanity continues to evolve.
