@TaKoutsakotirka@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed The British wrote you a power sharing constitution and kept two enormous bases. Your fight was about ENOSIS and you lost it 😂
Let’s leave it at that - goodnight!
@TaKoutsakotirka@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed Liberation? You’re living in cloud cuckoo land if you think someone is going to kick Turkey out. This is what I mean about sleepwalking to partition. It’s a delusional fantasy to think they will just leave.
@TaKoutsakotirka@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed It is. I also think it’s the opinion of GC politicians but it would be political suicide for them to admit it so we have this charade of ‘we’re ready for negotiations tomorrow’. Do you honestly believe that a federal solution is achievable now?
@TaKoutsakotirka@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed It’s too late now. Too many settlers in TRNC now. That ship has sailed and the GC government knows it. Any opportunities to resolve have been missed I fear so everyone sleepwalks to partition.
@TaKoutsakotirka@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed As the last 52 years will have taught you, Turkey are unlikely to leave and certainly not without negotiations. If the GC government obstruct the TCs from even engaging with diplomats then to me it demonstrates they don’t want a solution as they’re being obstructive.
@TaKoutsakotirka@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed So because of that, diplomats shouldn’t be able to talk to the TRNC leadership? A very convenient way of you excusing the continued isolation of Turkish Cypriots.
@Euliberty@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed Sadly, I share your concerns! Very difficult to see a positive way forward. I don’t support partition at all but it feels like are sleepwalking towards it
Absolutely right. It’s impossible to conclude anything other than the RoC government are trying to stall any progress. They’re scared of diplomats even listening to the arguments of the Turkish Cypriot side.
The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, recently visited Cyprus. As did the his Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.
Their message was clear. There will be no 5+1 talks until the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities show that they are capable of implementing Confidence Building Measures as a first step. The UN cannot and will not impose a solution. It must come from the two communities under which sovereignty of the island is shared. And help will only come when they first show that they are willing and able to compromise and work together for the greater good.
The Greek Cypriot Administration has so far refused to open new crossings and refused to de-mine the area around the buffer zone. Both initiatives were agreed to by the Turkish Cypriots.
Now, they are advising embassies to stay away from a talk by the Turkish Cypriot leader, @tufanerhurman . As if listening the point of view and the proposals of the people you are supposed to build a future with is a bad thing.
It’s a strange way to build confidence. It’s a strange approach to finding a new settlement.
You could be forgiven for concluding that it looks more like stalling and avoiding progress.
A cynic may conclude that the very public push by the Greek Cypriot leader, @Christodulides, for the UN to be involved was more a case of political theatre than a genuine desire to solve the Cyprus problem.
This is what happens when one side continues to benefit from the Cyprus problem, because they’re treated as the sole legitimate government. And when the other is punished for a lack of settlement with embargoes and isolation.
It’s no surprise that one side is incentivised to avoid a solution while the other is incentivised to find one.

@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed I was saying that the TC Government are representatives of the community as you objected to me calling them the government.
@Euliberty@100Kypro@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed Many call for it and many don’t. The current TC leader hasn’t called for it so why try and stop people talking to them? It’s a really bad look for the RoC government.
@100Kypro@FFNCyprus@Young_Turk_Cyp@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed The EU themselves even went to the North to meet with them and the RoC didn’t protest. Why are they now protesting diplomats meeting them in the buffer zone? Clearly concerned about the north’s views being heard.
@100Kypro@FFNCyprus@Young_Turk_Cyp@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed Call them the representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community if it makes you happier. But stop diplomats listening to what they have to say? Shows that the RoC government has no intent of reaching a solution doesn’t it?
@100Kypro@FFNCyprus@Young_Turk_Cyp@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed I am not. They’re welcome to reply here to tell us why they switch comments off but assuming they won’t so the conclusion I’ve drawn is that they’re representing their community and don’t want to hear opposing statements in their replies.
@100Kypro@FFNCyprus@Young_Turk_Cyp@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed Interesting story in the Cyprus Mail yesterday where it was reported the RoC government have been dissuading foreign diplomats from attending a speech/event organised by the TRNC government. Absolutely incredible that the RoC government are afraid of discourse.
@100Kypro@FFNCyprus@Young_Turk_Cyp@PeterKGeoghegan@UKCypriotFed I’m not even the spokesperson in my own household 😂
But I don’t think these campaign organisations talk about wanting discourse with their opponents do they? They represent the interests of their respective communities.
