"On one hand this, on the other hand I'm not going to be a dictator, we must respect federations, etc." And reverting to the "all war is bad" line is how Kremlin proxies give themselves away.

Where it gets interesting is a few moves down the road. RCF has nominated Dvorko, but after today that nomination will be from a non-member federation. When he "wins", will his presidency be procedurally illegitimate?

You can bet FIDE is having an emergency meeting right now on how to spin this and coordinate their response. They are in a real bind. They cannot censure Kramnik for his part in it, because he is Russian. But he refuses to shut up. /1

FIDE has so far waffled, saying things like, well, maybe Kramnik has some points that should be listened to, while sending subtle hints that he ought to tone it down. But it hasn't worked, and VK probably feels more empowered now and will be still louder about "anti-cheating" /2

@MarkTWIC @PHChess @ninkibah @demishassabis Mark, you are along the right lines re: RU decline. Campo was ejected amid the political chaos in early 90s Moscow. RU was practically a failed state at that point. Best hope for FIDE is that RU similarly falls apart once Vova croaks, which appears somewhat likely.
