Ambassador Ervin Jose Massinga, where were you when thousands of Ethiopians were being killed and civilians were being subjected to repeated drone strikes over the past three years?

Why is the focus now on criticizing the rebels for launching an offensive, while there has been far less urgency in condemning the government���s military operations and the civilian suffering that preceded it?

If the United States is genuinely concerned about peace and the protection of civilians in Ethiopia, then the standard must be the same for everyone. Violence against civilians should be condemned regardless of who commits it.

You cannot ask, “Why did the rebels launch an offensive?” without also asking, “What led Ethiopia to this point?” Accountability must apply to the government, the armed opposition, and every other actor involved.

Ethiopians deserve peace, justice, and accountability not selective condemnation.
