We went on two novelty search expeditions for Holly & Mat this autumn. First to Kinder Scout in The Peak District, with various cameras attached to our bodies. Then in the latent space of image diffusion models, prospected by agentic LLMs in an ongoing search for novel imagery.
it's truly a blessing to be able to merge so many interests in one project, revealed to us by a serendipitous moment. and to do it in such willing and adventurous company — thank you. onwards we tread.
Open-endedness reconciles the high goals of machine learning with the goals of high art, establishing the freedom for machines and humans to freely explore what interests them in the hope of discovering something new.
We conceived this project as a game to try and give agents the freedom to go on a novelty hunt for new images, and I liked the idea of calling it "Kinder Scout" in reference to the Mass Trespass in the mountains of England - a protest that attempted to establish the right for anyone to roam the land freely.
I hadn't told our collaborators @teropa and @samueldiggins my naming idea yet when they explained to me they had planned a retreat for a few days near the deadline they couldn't reschedule. When I asked where, they said "Kinder Scout". Just wow.
In the spirit of unplanned signs (what I call angel moments) we rode the serendipity and asked them to wear cameras for their hike, with the simple prompt to only follow what they thought was interesting in the moment.
These images are sent to an ensemble of agents who mutate and narrativize to try and improve on their most novel images. Humans and inhumans on the same mission to discover something together.
Eternally grateful to Tero and Sam for being so down to experiment and see where things lead.
Drawing inspiration from ‘90s video games and websites, we had the privilege of collaborating with @yurisuzuki and the teams at @pentagram and @ctpt_studio, along with illustrator Rob Pybus, to bring this vision to life.

Our AI wordmark is now on a hat!
We pulled our favorite latent letterforms from our collabs with @barneymccann and @ctpt_studio and from research by @iraphas13, @douglas_eck & @hardmaru & ransom-noted them into a logo.
