“Two years ago, I woke up in a maximum security prison in Zimbabwe with no toilet, no water, and no underwear. We ate watery porridge with our hands because we didn’t have spoons.

Before lights off, we had to line up in queues for role call – groups A, B, C, and D. D for Dangerous.

And even though the other women there had committed murder, armed robbery, and infanticide, I was the one put in the dangerous group. All because of a single tweet.

So it might surprise you, that after repeated arrests and wrongful imprisonment, I have come here today, to the United Nations — optimistic. Because the crackdown now taking place in Zimbabwe is a sign – that we’re winning. Even within his own party, President Mnangagwa is weak. Their own intelligence says the opposition will win this summer.

I am the National Spokesperson for the Citizens Coalition for Change, the country’s main opposition party.

Because we dare to challenge the system, I have been arrested repeatedly. My car was smashed four times. I survived an armed robbery of my house.

And then, in 2021, the local police slammed into a bus and killed a baby. I remember seeing the video of the mother, carrying this pale limp baby crying, grabbing the police officer by the collar. Crying, “He killed my baby!”

I tweeted: This is rogue policing. Disproportionate use of force. It’s unconstitutional. No baby should die because of police brutality.

I didn’t make this video go viral. By the time I tweeted about it, it was already viral. But they arrested me anyway, and that’s how I wound up in a maximum-security prison.

I was charged with “Communicating falsehoods that are prejudicial to the statehood.” It showed me first-hand how the government will manipulate the law for their own gain.

The judge and the prosecutors had no regard for my rights. They refused to admit the video of the mother and her dead baby, claiming I was a liar, and that the baby wasn’t dead. They didn’t let my lawyer ask all his questions or finish his statement.

Today, I face a 20-year prison sentence because of my tweets. I’m free for now – though no Zimbabwean is truly free.

My arrest sent a chilling message to the rest of society: “We’re watching you, even on twitter. And this is what you get: punishment for participating in opposition politics.”

But I wouldn’t risk my life and freedom if I didn’t sincerely believe that change is possible.

Courage doesn’t mean that you’re not afraid. It means that you act in spite of your fear.

I choose courage. This summer, we’re going to paint the country yellow, and the Zanu-PF dictatorship will end.

Hope and action are the sustenance of those who change the world.
